The ceremony of innocence is drowned

The fighting had started all across America. According to Bastion, a significant number of the X-men were involved in the combat in New York.

Which meant that the children here were left all alone. There would be no one to save them this time.

He gave the first unit the signal to advance.

The physical attacks did, at best, merely superficial damage. His endoskeleton was laced with adamantium, so a few hits from Santo barely put a dent in him, and Dust's sandstorm only scratched the surface, damaging some of Pierce's "skin", but nothing more substantial than that.

Ricochet's EMP disc was more effective, and once it went off, Pierce was as functional as a lawn gnome. For the next twenty or so seconds, at least. All fo his critical systems were shielded from that kind of attack, and his secondary systems were already rebooting.

Poke at the giant lawn gnome at your own peril, children.

Sooraya had seen Pierce's full stop, and called out to Santo and Johnny:

"Now what?"

Johnny hollered back before heading over to secure Hellion's phalanx. "Either get him pinned, or have someone get him miles away!" He flitted off across the grounds.

"He looks tough," she said in an undertone, backing away.

She knew she didn't have the power to send him away. She started to look around frantically for someone who could.

Sofia seemed to fit the bill. The mass of sand retreated, ducking behind bushes and pillars as she went searching. She wasn't going to call out this time and ping Pierce as to what was going on, because -

- yes, already he was starting to get up.

Not good.

Not if Amara had anything to do about it.

The ground started to shake around Pierce, and magma erupted around him, as Amara brought it up from beneath the crust.

"Not today Pierce, not ever."

As she headed back to the others to regroup, passing where she'd left her communicator (a sheer act of God that it was still there!) she heard snippets of a very disturbing happenstance elsewhere on the grounds. Far ahead, toward the Reavers' front line.

"What is going on?" she all but shrieked into her communicator, looking around at the other students beside her. "Am I hearing things?"

That was Jay.

... oh, no.

Pierce's skin and clothes were burning, and some of his metal parts glowed with the heat. It only made him look morel ike the monster he truly was.

"That tickles, girl."

He waded his way out of the impromptu lava pit and lunged at Magma.

No thoughts, only instinct moves Santo to react first to intercept Pierce from Amara.

"Look you flat-front Ken doll, you ain't...what...-" stunned confusion flashes across Rockslide's face and he looks down at the lava pit he's wading in. Heat? I feel..h-how is this happeni... In front of Pierce and everyone else, Rockslide's body trembles as the lava licks and merges up his legs. Then with a shifting surge, he's swallowed beneath the crust of magma.
