Just A Simple Get Together... What Could Possibly Go Wrong?

Jan 02, 2009 21:26

They made reservations. They confirmed the reservations.

Yet, when they arrived at the restaurant, those reservations seemed to have gotten lost. Somehow, Scott couldn't shake the feeling Nathan was involved in that. They were told it would be a fifteen minute wait for a table. Forty-three minutes and twenty-seven seconds later, the group of all ( Read more... )

The waiter finally came over.

"Are you ready to order?"

He took one look at Alex, though, and instinctively knew that one, at least, would be a crappy tipper.

"If you're looking for something in your price range, sir, may I suggest the appetizers. Or if you wish, I can bring you the children's menu."

Lorna's jaw almost dropped at that and she jumped to her husband's (and her own) defense, "Are you sure? Given your appetizers cost more than some of your main dishes," she snapped back, managing to keep her jaw in place, "We're fine with the 'big kid's menu.'"

She didn't bother to add a 'thank you.' There went his tip (at least as far as she was concerned).

"That's the calorie content, miss," he said in a polite tone, with a quietly snobbish and sarcastic smile on his face. "We don't put the prices on the menu."

Because if you needed to know how much the food costs beforehand, you likely couldn't afford to pay for it anyway.

She had known that, but she also knew when you put lobster in an appetizer it was often more expensive than say, the salads or other dinners. It really depended on the whim of the Sous Chef. Lorna wondered if the idiot waiter knew she was battling the urge to repeatedly bang his head into the table via the metals in his blood.

She smiled sweetly in return, "Why thank you. What would I do if we didn't have you to tell us these things?" That was indeed wild sarcasm on her voice.

Scott bit his tongue for the moment. He wanted to stick up for Alex (and let him know that if he had trouble paying for anything, he'd cover the balance), but considering that Alex always translated I've got your back, baby bro as I think you're weak and pathetic and I constantly have to save your lousy ass, which in turn was responsible for countless fights to the near death between them...

...well, he'd let Alex deal with it. And hoped his brother wouldn't explode. All in the name of joyous family harmony.

He watched Alex out of the corner of his eye.

Alex looked over at the server. "Just the shrimp cocktail. I ate before we left." he said sweetly. The temperature in his vicinity, however, jumped about four degrees F.

Under the table, he made sure to kick his wife's leg. Now was not the time to get into it with the staff.

The kick got a death glare. As far as Lorna was concerned after waiting almost an hour for a table that should've been reserved they didn't need to be hassled by the wait staff too.

"You sure, honey?" Lorna returned just as sweetly.

"Positive." he said, giving nearly diabetics instant comas. He looked at his darling bride and mouthed "Let it go" to her as discreetly as he could manage.

Nathan can't help but give Alex a darkly amused message, You do realize your wife is displaying more of a spine than you are right now? Or is this the temperamental Lensherr side coming into play?

To the waiter, "Your best sake and I'll also have a salad. Tell your Chef to surprise me," said in a sarcastic smile and tone to perfectly match their idiot waiter.

If he's the only Summers here without a woman to nag him on the aspects of behaving and proper etiquette, he fully intends on taking advantage of that.

Alex looked over to his Idiot Nephew and decided to think very hard at him.

~College student, remember? Neither Lorna or I exactly have a lot of cash to our names. So we're keeping it simple.~ he shoved at Nathan.

Telepathic subtlety was not one of his strong suits.

That causes a slight wince thanks to Annoying Loud Uncle.

"His fault we're all here, therefore there should be no problem sticking him with the bill," switching to normal communication while referring to Scott.

"Saving for college doesn't appear to be your only reason," having noted the particular pushiness to get Lorna to eat.

Alex just grinned at that. "Plan I'm all in favor of, really. Besides, Scott'll just charge it off to the Institute or use Dad's old American Express or something." he said with a smirk.

But he sobered a bit at Nathan's final words. "I'm not a fan of, well, let's just call them complications that can come from anorexia nervosa." he said.

As if he hadn't done his homework on it.

It was always times like this - when Nathan got mule-stubbon - that his nephew reminded him of his mother. And reminders of Mads were, in Alex Summers's world, Not Good Things.

Lorna kicked him. Hard.

"Shut. Up," she said, rather quietly. Someone had just lost a bunch of 'reward' points for the night.

Nathan remembers why he tolerates Alex more than his own father - the common urge to toy with the stick up Scott's ass and Xavier's morals. Where he gets his stubbornness though is entirely debatable and Lorna and Wanda's discomfort doesn't stop him from commenting.

"Considering all the other neurosises here at this table, it's not entirely out of place."

Actually, he could name one for everyone present at this table.

"Nathan," his tone was one of warning. Cable had something worse than a woman to nag him about manners; he had parents.

Scott gave his order, and ordered a couple of bottles of wine for the table, then looked at his brother.

"Actually, this get together was your idea," he wanted that stated for the record. "But if you want me to take the hit for the bill...", he offered.
