Aftermath

Nick stood in Murdock's office waiting for the man to get in. Tasha was on the Helicarrier and he figured Murdock would want to see her. Nick didn't feel the least bit guilty or bad he didn't include Murdock in on the mission. It was done and it all went down the way it was supposed to go. Matt walked into his own office, not bothering to turn on the light. "Fury." he said calmly. "Can I help you with something?" Fury didn't seem excited, agitated, or anything other than calm. And he still stank of cigar and too many hours behind a desk.

"Come on," he said. "We're goin' for a ride."

Matt quirked an eyebrow. "Didn't Mrs Fury tell you not to get into aircars with strange men?" he joked. "I might be able to shift around some appointments, let Foggy run interference." he thought out loud as he unerringly walked towards his own desk.

"Give me a few moments to make some arrangements." he said. "And where are you taking me?"

"We didn't have aircars when I was a kid. Hell, we barely had cars." Nick stood up. "Wanna see Tasha? Then come with me." Nick didn't wait. He walked out of the office.

"Did they have fire when you were a kid?" he joked, writing a long note for Foggy that he then dropped on the other man's desk on his way out.

"Wait. You went in already and got her out? Without me?" he said, his voice heating.

"No they didn't," Nick chuckled.

Here it comes. Nick had been expecting this.

"Yeah. It wasn't a mission for a bleedin' heart," Nick said gruffly. "It's done an' she's safe." Nick walked out heading for the car.

"Bleeding heart, huh?" he said as they made their way to his car. "Is that how it is now?"

"There was a lot o' blood an' a lot of body bags." Nick climbed in the car.

"I've put my share into the hospital." he pointed out as he got in the passenger side. "So you wanted assassins, not rescuers?"

"It got the job done," Nick said and started the car. In a minute they were airborne and heading for the Helicarrier.

"Yeah. Because it's much easier to just kill people in your way." he said tiredly. Same old Fury. About as sublte as a Molotov cocktail.

It was a wonder SHIELD got anything done as an espionage outfit.

"Ya want those yahoos comin' after her again?" Nick asked as they gently touched down on the flight deck of the 'Carrier.

"Not especially, but aren't you the spy? The best plan you could come up with was "March in guns blazing"?" he taunted.

He climbed out of the car and winced. It was _loud_ up here on the flight deck. Staying out here too long would be really, really painful.

"I was a three striper before a spy," Nick said as he started walking toward an elevator.

"Oh, so that makes all the difference in the world." he said, sarcasm dripping from his words. He wasn't quite sure where the exit off the deck was so he followed Nick, the low-grade headache already forming behind his useless eyes.

Nick led him down to the medical bay. He stayed outside the area where they had Natasha. "We've been keeping her out to let the ESPers go through her mind to see what the hell those yahoos did to her. She'll be comin' out of it soon."

Nick turned and left. He knew when privacy was called for.
