It never took much to stir up hostilities between the Skrulls and Kree. The two races had been at war with each other off and on for eons. The current cease fire between them was so very fragile, it always felt as if it could be broken at any moment.
In the far reaches of the Skrull Empire, a single ship, the Sams'ng, was on patrol. There was nothing remarkable about the area it was patrolling; no inhabited planets, no resource rich planetoids, not even a single space station for at least a days journey in any direction. However, it was in this area of space that the Skrulls shared a border with the Kree.
This patrol started like so many others, all quiet, with nothing to report. However, mid-mission, there was a rather sudden catastrophic failure in engineering. It resulted in the port side engine exploding, and the starboard engine rendered powerless. The ship lurched, adrift in space. The captain called for help, but it would be a couple of hours before any would reach them.
Within that time, though, the Skrull ship drifted across the border into Kree space. This incursion did not go unnoticed. The Kree vessel Kluamm was sent to investigate. It too would arrive within a couple of hours.
In the race to get to the vessel, the Kluamm was first, though only narrowly. The Captain hailed the enemy ship. At worst, they would offer to tow them back to Skrull space, but that offer was never made. The Sams'ng had begun to open fire on the Kree ship.
Aboard the Sams'ng, the Captain demanded to know who had fired on the other ship. He got no answer, though, not that it mattered. Within seconds, he and his crew were dead as the Kree returned fire.
A pair of Skrull ships had responded to the distress call, and arrived to witness the very end of this conflict. All they saw was a crippled Skrull vessel mercilessly taken apart by the Kree. They waited for no orders from their superiors, and both ships crossed the border to launch an assault on the Kluamm.
It was a fierce battle, but the Klaumm was outnumbered and outgunned by the Skrull ships. It was destroyed, just as it had destroyed the Sams'ng. Both Skrull ships retreated back into Skrull space, but the Kree would not let this go unpunished.
