She has spent hours in the current of the timestream. Going forward in the river is easy, going backward is taxing. It is taking nearly every ounce of her strength to keep pushing forward

Beast had pronounced his prognoses!1 Their status? Both Cable and Rachel are confined for overnight observation. Rachel is not concussed and the most likely reason for their stay is to force them to rest.
Rachel doesn't need to have rest forced upon her. She'd exhausted enough on her own that she's having to fight to stay awake.
I told you I wasn't concussed. She just wants sleep. Really.

Rachel turns her head to the side to look up and over at Cyclops, Scott, her dad. It's then that a memory surfaces . It's the Danger Room, a scene right out of Shrek complete with a pink dragon.
A look of confusion crosses her face. That's not her memory.
Re: And sometime later...cable_readyApril 9 2008, 02:37:43 UTC
"What?" Cable's watching her out of the corner of his eye.
If it weren't for the fact that astral chronotripping seems to have temporarily screwed up his bodysliding calibrations, he'd already be on Greymalkin - Rachel possibly with him. As it is, he's silently stuck on the cot next to his sister waiting for 5000mg of ibuprofen to kick in. Soon as it does and as soon as his sister gets some rest, he'll be going.
Re: And sometime later...baby_phoenix_April 9 2008, 02:44:45 UTC
"I... don't know." Confused, she stares up at the ceiling. "I just had this flash of memory but I don't remember it and yet I was there. I remember the smell of the smoke from the dragon." She raises her hand to her face, her fingers press into her temple. "I think I saw myself in the timestream."
Re: And sometime later...baby_phoenix_April 9 2008, 04:22:17 UTC
"I was tired. It might have been a reflection or an illusion but I could have sworn. She looked like me but different." She is the only Rachel Summers. Unique. The only Rachel to have ever crossed timelines, certainly. Or is she?
Re: And sometime later...cable_readyApril 9 2008, 19:08:39 UTC
His lips tighten, pausing a moment before choosing to answer her.
"Or possibly not. The last time I saw you was shortly before you traded places with Braddock in the timestream, after Redd and Sly... Scott and Jean were married."
Somber eyes lock upon his sister. "But the last I saw Rachel Summers was when she gave up her place in this time to free the Phoenix force to protect the M'Kraan crystal." A pause. "After Jean Grey's death."
Re: And sometime later...baby_phoenix_April 9 2008, 23:20:51 UTC
She remembers that. "I remember." The details after her switch or foggy. Rachel doesn't remember much and some of what she experienced will be lost to her forever. She will never remember all of the details of her life as Mother Askani. "She looked like me. I think we collided but I'm not sure."
At the mention of Jean, she becomes visibly stressed and anxious. "Mom's dead?" Rachel bolts upright and stares at Cable. Her breathing has increased and so has her heart rate. "What happened? Who did it?"
Re: And sometime later...cable_readyApril 11 2008, 02:12:15 UTC
Just as well he did, as Cable is not sure at this moment how he would have answered. The subject, his father's presence, and the pressure in his head make it slightly difficult to concentrate. There'd been no message. No X-Man had told him about the death of Jean Grey. But he'd known anyway. Knew enough to prepare the then-Rachel to become the new Phoenix host upon the first host's death.
Nodding stiffly, "Charles." The state he left Cerebro in goes unmentioned right now.
Re: And sometime later...baby_phoenix_April 11 2008, 02:30:43 UTC
"How? Couldn't you save her?" She's on her feet thanks to being telekinetically lifted. It's not clear who she's yelling at. It could be the Professor, Cable or even dear old Dad. "What happened?"
Rachel is very angry and the more angrier than she becomes visible the phoenix emblem over her eye becomes. The anger is tinged by grief. Currently, she's only a danger to herself. She's over-exerting herself. "I want to know! Tell me!"
For a moment, she is just a little girl and all she wants is her mother.
Re: And sometime later...x_professor_xApril 11 2008, 02:42:53 UTC
Cable gets a nod, but there are priorities.
It would be, even now, easy to incapacitate Rachel. Release a few chemicals into her brain, cause the balance to rift slightly, she'd be asleep for a few hours. But she would also learn nothing.
Braving the fires of the phoenix itself, Professor X places a hand on Rachel's shoulder, looking her in the eye. "You are loosing control." The Professor says, not unkindly, but certainly sternly. "You have every right to be angry, young woman, but your gifts are your responsibility. Take a deep breath, calm down, and remaster your powers."

Scott didn't say anything. Just at the mention of it, thoughts of Jean and what happened filled his head. No, he hadn't told Cable. He honestly had barely been able to discuss it with anyone.
How could he tell them that the woman he loved more than life itself was dead... because the people that she loved the most gathered together and killed her?
Re: And sometime later...baby_phoenix_April 11 2008, 03:39:58 UTC
The Professor's hand does enough to calm her down. Enough that the phoenix emblem fades and she sits back down onto her cot. "Professor..." But then her attention turns to Scott.
She is a strong telepath. However, that massive amount of strength has never been trained properly, never been taught. Sometimes Rachel moves around like an elephant in people's mind. A part of her is fearful of using her telepathy from her experiences as one of Ahab's hounds.
Rachel doesn't need to be a strong telepath to read Scott's mind. She easily picks up the mental images that are floating around inside his mind. It's almost as if she's witnessing Jean being vaporized right before her. Tears start to trickle down her face.
She knows what happened but knowing what happened isn't the same as understanding it. Nor does it make the truth any easier to bear.

Damn it. The Professor was afraid of this.
What does he-what should he do? What can he do?
Well, there's a thought: Stop being a coward and act like the father figure you let yourself become. "Scott, Nathan." Xavier's voice is, again, not unkind, but not something you'd use to make a pillow. "Come here, both of you."
