Consciousness slowly came back to Nick. Darkness slowly released its hold on him and he felt like a swimmer breaking the surface of the water.
Pain was the first thing to register.
The pain came from various parts of his body. His ribs were at the top of the list of complaints. He was still able to breathe, a good thing in his book, which meant no punctured lungs. Second place went to his knee. He tried to move it, but he was rewarded with a sharp stab of pain. His arm followed his knee on the list. Arteries and veins hadn't been hit, otherwise he would've bled out by now. His chest burned with pain and Nick wasn't quite sure what had happened. Whatever it was it had been done after he had blacked out. Rounding out the list was the mother of all headaches from Crossbones' punches.
He had been in worse shape before, but not by much.
The restraints holding him down on the table were the second things to register. This was not good.
