My first month in Japan is already over, I can’t believe it. Time certainly flies when you are having a good time.

To celebrate my one-month anniversary, I finally screwed up enough courage to use the kitchen. That’s right, after an entire month of buying bentos and instant noodles or eating out, I made spaghetti with tomato sauce. What an achievement! Of course, before I started cooking, I spent about an hour scrubbing the kitchen surfaces, washing all the plates, cutlery and pans, and finally soaking them in boiling water, because apparently Japan has turned me into a germaphobe. But seriously, if you had seen the state of the kitchen before, you couldn’t blame me for trying to sterilize everything. Anyway, this is what the kitchen looks now. I’ll spare you the before picture.

Speaking of food, ironically the one thing that I miss the most here in Japan is rice. No, I am not kidding. I love long-grain rice, but I really don’t care much for the sticky Japanese version. Unfortunately, that’s the only rice I’ve found here so far.

This week my favorite roommate has moved out and left me heart-broken. To think that I will never again see him drinking his morning coffee in the kitchen wearing nothing but a tiny bathrobe… Okay, that’s not why I will miss him at all. But he was really nice and funny, and unlike other people in this house, very reasonable. Now I am all alone with the Californian and his psycho girlfriend who apparently thinks I am her love rival. It would be quite funny if it weren’t so annoying. Maybe I should inform her that I wouldn’t touch her boyfriend even if someone paid me lots of money to do so, because honestly, the mere thought of it makes me nauseous. But somehow I don’t think that argument would help with the situation. I hope our next roommate will be a supermodel, so she can direct her jealousy issues at someone else for a change.

But apart from germaphobia and jealous girlfriends, I feel really at home in Tokyo. The only thing I really could do without are the earthquakes. Especially when they wake you up at 7am on a weekend. And the really evil thing is, they don’t simply wake you up, they also make sure you get enough adrenaline in your system to make any further attempts at sleep impossible. And believe me, when you’ve been up until 5 am, that’s really not what you want.

And now I should probably go to bed, otherwise I won’t make it through school tomorrow.
