Anyone have any suggestions for good web designers/web design groups? As much as I'd love to, I cannot make my own site as I just don't have the skills needed to make something professional, but I do need a portfolio site and soon

The HTML sites you showed me would actually be a good fit: this style of making the site look like something, something real, something NOT a website, is very much down my alley.
http://jennthornton.com is my favorite. Its VERY clean, with a strong color theme. Her site makes a good model for yours, since all the pages are very similar: its basically one nice photo and some photo shopping. Not a lot of work, means not very expensive but the site looks great!
Lets come up with our visual metaphor: is the site a watercolor painting? A sketch book? A still life?
Here is how we can handle the money, if you agree:
3 payments of $250 - one before I begin, one when I show you the designs, and a final payment after the HTML is complete. That we can both be a bit secure as we progress, and if you need to drag things out for financial reasons, just say so. (Also note: I can take PayPal, credit cards, even a check online.)
I love to start as soon as possible since our business concert season is almost about to start, I would mind getting the design portion of this done before that (I actually have some time tomorrow). So let me know when you are ready!
I agree, the thorton site is lovely. Her designer quoted me at waaaaaay more than I felt was reasonable though.
Personally, I like the idea of a watercolor in the early stages of painting- at least in my style, which means just background texture. I've got an image that has the sort of thing I'm thinking of, which I can give you.
Let me check with my financial situation and my benefactors (aka my mother, gd love the woman she's still helping me out with life- granted my help is low budget, but it's help nonetheless!), and check back in with you. Do you have an email/aim screenname at which I can reach you?
