http://wonkette.com/politics/dept%27-of-patriotism/say-no-to-burqas-303450.php This basically sums up a lot of what I hate about yer Americans as well as their sections of "teh internets." Other examples include the reaction to any middle-aged man with his shirt off and, often, any girl without breast implants. It's not remotely the worst example, but its relative innocuousness is precisely what gets it under my skin, somehow.
Look at this picture:
Then consider these comments (all the positive or otherwise inoffensive/non-relevant ones removed):
PEEJAY: "Note to Gina - you may want to avoid photos that accentuate: (a) the shortness of your legs; (b) the width of your hips; and (c) the paleness of your skin. For me, strikes one, two and three. [visible shudder]"
H. SAUCE FIREWATER FOR CONGRESS: "@PeeJay: d) the lack of a health club membership."
JAMIESOMMERS: "@PeeJay: @H. Sauce Firewater for Congress: e) the sagginess of your unsupported boobs."
MANCHUCANDIDATE: "@JamieSommers: @H. Sauce Firewater for Congress: @PeeJay: If I spent 15 months in the desert with no porn (thanks boy loving fundies), few women and no no diaper brothels and getting shot at (especially getting shot at), I think my standards would be so low that I would hit that repeatedly. Hell if the poster girl looked like Bea Arthur in a bikini, I'd probably hit that too."
TOMMMCATT: " @PeeJay:F) Mom butt."
PEEJAY: "@JamieSommers: You sure those are boobs? I thought they were udders."
FLIPPIN: "Come now--if moldy, festing Walter Reed is good enough for those vets then this creature is too!"
I see this all the time - perfectly attractive, cute, regular-type people getting torn apart as, SO DISGUSTING. Not that the woman in the picture blows my mind with her retro forties charms and I can't stop thinking about her or whatever, but surely she resembles a pretty girl adequately enough to pose for pictures in her bathing suit without being pilloried by trolls. Is it just that you can't get ahead in the centres of US power (Wonkette is a US political blog, DC-based) unless you're a perfect physical specimen (or an old fat white dude), and so the commenters are all young political hotshots/hotties attacking from a position of strength? Or are they all shitty, embittered, pale ugly nerd/morlocks hiding behind their keyboards and venting their lonely rage?
Or is it porn that fosters this noxious blend of restrictive beauty standards and misogyny, especially women, toward those who don't make it? Or is it magazines and Hollywood? I see this reaction to Spears and Lohan and whatever a lot too, and while, again, they're not my favourites, and they seem kind of nuts, I guess, it seems from what you read that the mere sight of Britney's mug turns a lot of people's stomachs.
Or IS this pin-up chick way gross, and me thinking she's kind of pretty just betrays my essentially c-grade status on the reproductive ladder? Or is it all just aspirationalism - like, if you don't admit anyone has any attracto at all unless they're WAY hotter than you yourself, or admit anyone has anything on the ball unless they're way smarter than you and a superman, you'll become smarter and more attractive and be vaulted into the inner sanctum sanctorum of power, all through a sort of weird asshole osmosis?
Or is it a rich-WASP thing, because they're all talking to each other and they have a very specific conception of attractiveness that is much more restrictive than that of the society as a whole? Or am I just naive, and it's always been this way? I feel like it's getting worse and worse.
Point me in the right direction here!
