Michael Connelly - The Lincoln Lawyer
The first I've read by him not to star detective Harry Bosch, and I wondered how he'd do with a lawyer protagonist. It's brilliant, with a completely original plot, starring a lawyer who specialises in getting people off without any concern for actual guilt or innocence - indeed, he assumes guilt. So what to do when you decide a client is evil? He decides to get him off anyway, but to make sure he spends his life in jail nonetheless, seeking a way to win the case and condemn him at the same time. It's superbly played out, with some major twists at the end. Just after finishing this, I saw an ad for the movie, which I hadn't known about - no idea if that will make the most of this or not, but it's a terrific plot.
