How do you tell someone you love them when you can speak no words? Bumblebee had learned to communicate through his radio and did a fairly good job to make himself clear to the humans he guarded, Sam Witwicky and Mikaela Banes.
But the mismatch of words, ads, songs and talk shows of his radio were hardly the most meaningful of ways to express the affection he felt for the couple he guarded.
He sought the help of those he knew who shared or knew about the kind of affection he felt for both Sam and Mikaela. But Ironhide's concept of romance implied high grade, Ratchet and the nearest flat surface. Ratchet was a little more helpful, but even the medic had a hard time hitting the meaningful side. He was practical and suggested a direct approach -- write a simple 'I love you'.
Bumblebee then approached Wheeljack who suggested poetry, and although his suggestion seemed more along the lines of what Bumblebee wanted to do, reciting his love in the form of a complex equation didn't seem like poetry all that much, let alone romantic.
Then he approached Sunstreaker, and the Lamborghini Murcielago surprised him with a question. "How fast can you bat those wings?"
Now, that came from the left field. However, the question actually made him curious. Just how fast could he bat his door wings? Overtaken by the curiosity the yellow Camaro began to bat his door wings, fluttering faster and faster, and then he realized the fluttering was producing a buzzing sound.
Bumblebee turned his attention back to Sunstreaker who was smiling at him with a smug expression and his arms crossed over his chest plate. "Some songs need no words, Bumblebee."
--------------
On a night of clear skies and bright moonlight, Bumblebee drove Sam and Mikaela to the lake, content under the cover of the night and almost complete silence. None spoke for a long time, Sam and Mikaela were sitting each on one of his thighs, stargazing.
The yellow Camaro brushed a fingertip gently along Sam's back, smiling inwardly at the squirming teen before he gave the female a similar treatment. Mikaela retaliated by leaning against his middle, stroking the plating gently and affectionately while she smiled to Sam with equal affection in her eyes.
Sam moved a little to fix his position on Bumblebee's thigh, leaning against him just like his girlfriend had done, and reached to stroke Bumblebee in the same affectionate way. The yellow hands of the Camaro rested carefully against their backs and the soft purring of his engine broke the near total silence.
Sam traced the half of a heart over the plating of Bumblebee's middle, and Mikaela took it upon herself to complete the finger drawing before interlacing her fingers with the boy's. Bumblebee took this as his cue and began to flutter his door wings faster and faster until they began to produce the buzzing sound once more. The fluttering stopped and started anew several times, forming a pattern -- a melody.
It was no melody either human could recognize, there was no way they could recognize the sounds, the buzzing of wings that 'spoke' in a language so different from their own. A poem for those beloved. A promise of lasting friendship and affection. A declaration of love.
Neither Sam nor Mikaela knew what the sounds meant -- if they meant anything at all, but the soft melody instilled feelings of security and well being, of being loved and cared for.
"Love you," Mikaela whispered softly, fingers still intertwined with Sam's and cheek pressed gently against Bumblebee. "Both of you."
Sam smiled and casted a glance up to his guardian, meeting the kind blue optics that promised unconditional protection and love. "We're the oddest trio, but I wouldn't want it any different."
Bumblebee's fluttering stopped for a moment, his antennas perked up for a moment before they fell flat against his helmet once more when his fluttering started anew, repeating the same melody as he brought a finger to his chest plate and traced a heart over it.
"We know 'Bee." Sam chuckled softly and patted the Camaro's side with his free hand. "We love you, too."
