Chapter 02

Blackheat sighed heavily, trying her hardest to pay attention to the documents before her optics to no avail. Recently, something had been eating at her circuits, and she couldn't quite tell why. Everything seemed just perfect in her life. She had a wonderful and loving mate and their sparkling that brought many satisfactions to them both. What could possibly be wrong? Just one thing. Prowl.

After some unexpected trips to the nearby park, she had been growing uneasy about her son's alienation from the rest of the world. His life was focused on his studies, spent some quality time with them, recharge, rinse and repeat. And while she was proud of her son's achievements, and loved him as much as she loved her mate, she couldn't help but feel something wasn't right about him after spending time watching other sparklings at the park.

Wheeljack had convinced Screendivider and herself about allowing Prowl into his learning center and into his honors class, and, letting pride take over herself for a bit, she agreed to it. Wheeljack's honors class was renowned through Cybertron for its high standards, and naturally, if he was offering a spot there for their kid it meant the sparkling merited it.

But often times she wondered if she and her mate had done the right thing. Prowl wasn't very sociable to begin with, and upon entering Wheeljack's class, the situation became ten times worse. Had they sacrificed their son's social development in favor of the development of his mind? Their son was even more of a loner than many of his classmates were, and the thought concerned her greatly.

"An energon cube for your thoughts," a voice chanted, forcing her to look up from her datapads to the familiar, smiling face of Hound.

"Oh, hi. Sorry, I didn't hear you coming in." She rubbed the bridge of her nose tiredly. "I'm just thinking about Prowl."

"I heard the little guy's gonna graduate first in class. Wheeljack won't shut up about it." Hound crossed his arms, his comment apparently sending Blackheat back to that brooding mood. "I thought that would make you puff out that chest of yours with pride. What's wrong?"

"Oh, it's not that I'm not happy. Screendivider and I are very happy about his progress. I'm sure he'll be one of the most brilliant minds of Cybertron. But he just..." Blackheat paused for a moment, trying to put her concerns into proper sentences. "Have you been to the park lately, Hound? Have you seen all those sparklings running around, playing, enjoying themselves? Doing what sparklings are supposed to do at such age?"

Blackheat stood up and walked to the large window of her office, looking out to no place in specific. "My own sparkling hasn't played with a toy in meta-cycles. He doesn't even have any friends. All he does is study and be a proper little 'bot to his parents' pride and joy." She spoke sadly.

"You think you're taking his childhood away in favor of a higher level of education?" Hound moved towards Blackheat, barely able to reach her shoulder to pat it gently. "Your kid's got his father's attitude. Prowl's never going to be the life of the party; you should know that."

"And I don't want him to be, either. But I want him to have good memories of his sparkling days, be more outgoing, even if quiet and reserved like his father. You know... having a bit of his mom in him wouldn't hurt." She smiled a bit. Screendivider and she were quite an odd match. She was foul-mouthed, gung-ho trigger-happy, ill-tempered, and very outgoing.

Screendivider, on the other hand, was quiet, serious, reserved, and rarely interacted with people outside of his official duties. Even the jokes about him being a female and Blackheat the male rarely got more than a sigh out of him. And extended company of other 'bots besides herself and Prowl seemed to put him in a foul mood. He could be almost as bad as Ratchet. Almost.

How they got together was something that neither of them could quite answer. They just knew they did and their lives had never been happier.

"Well, if you want my opinion --and even if you don't - Prowl's not gonna be happy if you force him out of his comfort zone. But you could at least take him out to the park, spend some time there with him and see if he comes out of it on his own?" The male shrugged.

Blackheat looked back to Hound, a smile quickly spreading across her features. "You know, that's actually a good idea."

--------------------

Prowl sat with his parents on a bench, watching the world go by. His attention, however, was on the playground, and that familiar gang of sparklings. Starscream carried a large box containing the toys he'd share with the others to play with. Sideswipe and Sunstreaker kept trying to reach the box and grab whatever they fancied to play with on that day.

"I told you both to wait, or you're not getting anything today!" Starscream huffed, trying his best to be as patient as he could with the twins.

"Maybe we should tie them up to a bench till we're ready," Thundercracker commented, smiling playfully when the twins complained and looked back at him with enormous pouts. "Oh, come on. You know I'm just playing."

"Why are we here?" Screendivider asked, diverting his son's attention away from the playground to look up at his parents.

"Just to kick back and relax. I like it here, anyway." Blackheat grinned widely, watching the cute twins squeal in joy when they were finally awarded a toy to play with. "Aww, I remember when Prowl was that tiny! He was such a cute, ever-smiling, shy little sparkling!"

Prowl raised his shoulders a bit as if trying to hide his face deep into his frame, a bit embarrassed by his mother's comments. He had no recollection of ever being that ever-smiling, shy little sparkling. But hey, if his mother said so, he must have been.
"Whatever fits your fancy." Screendivider wasn't very thrilled, but he preferred to let his mate get her way. He wasn't in the mood to get her cannons in his face at the moment.

"Hello!" Prowl squeaked as Jazz's face popped into his visual field, waving at him with that wide smile of his. "Scared ya? Sorry!"

Prowl nodded, fidgeting in his seat a bit, hearing his parents chuckle at his reaction. Jazz looked up at the adults and let out a surprised sound at the towering frame of Blackheat, "Woaaah. Hello!"

The female nodded to the sparkling, waving to him. "Hi there."

"You're Prowl's mommy?" Jazz looked back and forth between Blackheat and Screendivider, not quite sure which one was the mommy and which one the daddy. The motorcycle mech was about to say something but decided against it.

"That'd be me. And you are...?"

"Jazz! Hey, can Prowl come ta play with us?" The visored sparkling grabbed his fellow sparkling's arm before he even received a reply, pulling him out of his seat.

"He's all yours!" The female replied in sing-song and watched as his not-too-willing sparkling was lead to the playground to meet the group.

"You were planning this, weren't you?" She felt her mate's arm wrap around her midsection.

"Well, I didn't quite plan for it. But I was hoping it would happen."

"Hey guys! I got us a new play mate!" Jazz grinned and pulled Prowl in front of him, "He's Prowl - be good with him or his mommy will eat you all!" He pointed back to the adults sitting nearby, prompting a scared squeal from Sideswipe who immediately hid behind Sunstreaker.

"...my mom doesn't eat sparklings." He glared at Jazz. "But she'd probably fire her cannons..." Prowl rubbed the back of his neck, deciding that his mother probably would sound and look scary to anyone that didn't know her as well as he and his father.

"Hmm, new guy huh? Well, I'm Starscream and this is my toy box. If you want to play with us, you have to obey the rules." Starscream nodded and crossed his arms, trying to look as 'imposing' and important as he could. "There's only two rules, though. Return the toys by the time I have to go home. And don't be a jerk to the others. Got that?"

Prowl nodded, a bit unsure of why this sparkling even bothered to share his own toys with a stranger like him. It didn't make sense to him at all, but sparklings hardly ever made sense.

"Okay, there's the box, you can pick up whatever you want. Or you can play with Thundercracker and Skywarp if you want." Starscream returned to his favourite game block building, not seeming to mind much more about the new sparkling in the playground.

"Come on, let's play against Skywarp and 'Cracker!" the visored mech dragged Prowl towards the pair for a match of what humans would call 'soccer'.

-----------------------

"He wore himself out this time." Screendivider carried his son's form towards their home, the sparkling having falling into recharge mode shortly after Blackheat took off with them towards Praxus.

"It's natural. He's not used to spending this much energy in a physical activity." The female stretched out, feeling her stiff joints. "But it has given me an idea. That sparkling, Jazz, seems just right what our Prowl needs to loosen up. As much as any offspring of yours could loosen up!"

The golden and black male grunted at her comment but left the room to put their child on his berth. He allowed himself a small smile, stroking the sparkling's cheek gently. He had to agree with his mate about one thing: their son could benefit from spending more time with other sparklings and do other things aside his studies.

---------------------

"That's all for today's class. Remember, your assignments are due next week." Wheeljack dismissed his students. "Oh, Prowl, can you wait for a moment, please? I need to talk with you."

The black and white mech nodded, wondering what his teacher wanted to talk to him about.

"Your mom won't get off my aft about this, so I better tell you, now. You have a play date." Wheeljack wasn't particularly against it; he was a pretty outgoing and social mech and valued good fun as much as he valued his work. "Every seven orns you'll spend some quality time with your new playmate. Please, come in."

Prowl tilted his head when the familiar frame of Jazz came through the doors, wide smile on his cheerful face as usual. Prowl had a feeling he would be seeing more of Jazz for the orns to come and wondered if that was going to be a good or a bad thing.
