The stars, Mirage decided, stopped being fascinating after many vorns lost among them. He stared through the small window within the cargo bay of the Orion, the ship that currently traveled through the universe with a single purpose. To wait and protect.

Mirage and his crew mates awaited patiently the moment when a call would direct them somewhere to deliver the precious cargo they swore to protect with their lives. A little secret kept from every other Cybertronian but the handful of mechs that were tasked with this mission.

Mirage wondered if there would ever be a moment when they'd finally deliver their charge, or if they'd all wander the universe for eternity.

The sound of the door swishing open brought him out of his musings, and he turned golden optics to look at the medic that strode into the cargo bay. First Aid murmured a greeting which Mirage returned politely, watching the mech kneel by the small pod Mirage had been guarding for so long. It was a routine check the medic performed every few cycles to make sure the pod's tiny occupant was doing well.

Mirage watched silently as First Aid did his work, examinating the diminutive protoform. An infant locked in forced stasis in order to protect it. The precious cargo that the Orion's crew was meant to protect at all costs and bring him together with his creator when the time was appropriate.

The medic murmured something, stating the sparkling was doing all right, and leaving the room quietly. Mirage barely acknowledged his words and his departure. The once noble mech moved closer to the sparkling's pod, golden optics taking in the infant's diminutive frame, reminded that perhaps, at one point, that sparkling could have been his.

So many vorns ago, Mirage lived a different kind of life, the sole survivor of a long dead nobility that once had a heavy hand in the affairs of Cybertronians. He was selected by Megatron to become the mate of their glorious Prime. Mirage knew all along the Lord High Protector did not intend for the union to be a happy one, it was Megatron's way to punish Mirage for the sins of his sires. He was being denied the right to chose someone to share his unique gift with.

Nobles were a kind with unusual, powerful abilities, but most important of all, their functional aberrant sparks gave them the capacity to share or transfer their ability with someone else through the bonding of their sparks. As it stood, his union with the Prime would mean the effective end of his line, and the end of his noble gift, for he knew Prime's spark would never be bonded to his own. His gift never passed down to another mech, and thus the Allspark would not give life to a new noble.

Even if they could've been granted offspring, without the bonding, no child would have been a golden opticed mech, the tall tale mark of a noble. Back then, Mirage had been both, object of despise and object of desire, not for himself, but for his gift, despised for the wrong doings of his ancestors, for being different.

He knew Megatron loathed him, and loathed even more that in order to end his line, he had to push him into Optimus Prime's arms. The only mech that he considered would not be tempted by the lure of Mirage's aberrant spark. The mech that respected Mirage too much to force an unwanted spark bond upon him. His Prime.

There had always been a mutual respect between Mirage and Optimus Prime, both understanding the woes of the other, the weights and burdens that rested upon each other's shoulders. Mirage admired their Prime, far more than he disliked the Lord High Protector, whom he knew intended to pull everyone's strings to do his bidding. Megatron truly believed what he was doing was in the best interest of Cybertron at large, but Mirage knew it was but a delusion.

Yet, neither had the strength to fight his wishes, no real power to stand up and say 'no more'. Prime believed that in doing these personal sacrifices, he'd be able to contain Megatron, and hopefully bring him to see things in a different light, to save him from whatever was corrupting him. Noble, self sacrificing Optimus, willing to give up his own right to choose a mate to please his dearest Megatron.

Apologies had been made towards Mirage when he was brought to the Tower where he would be officially recognized as Prime's mate, branding him untouchable for any other mech or femme in the planet, marking the end of the nobility forever. "There's no need for apologies, my lord." Mirage had said back then --he understood the unwavering devotion Optimus had towards both Megatron and his role as Prime. He respected him greatly for that, and vowed to himself he'd do everything within his power to lessen his load. Be a confident if needed, a warm body through which the Prime could relieve his stress, the arms willing to hold the magnanimous mech when comfort was needed. They respected and cared for each other, but there was no love between them, a fact that saddened both.

The preparations for the ceremony were extended to ridiculous lengths by Megatron, playing a tortuous game on Prime, mocking and humiliating Mirage. And when Mirage thought things couldn't get any worse, he was confronted with a new development. Prime confided to him the creation of a new life, not through the Allspark, a life that had come from himself in ways he refused to explain. While Optimus had never said a thing about the creation's origin, Mirage suspected Megatron had a hand on the development, whether the bundle of parts cradled gently in one hand against the blue tinted silver metal of Prime's chest had been sired by the Lord High Protector, or his creation merely instigated by Megatron.

Whatever it was, Prime confided Megatron was growing more and more unstable, and Optimus feared for his child's safety. Within a deca-cycle, Mirage found himself inside of Prime's chamber along with five more mechs he was barely familiar with. The sparkling had been given a name, and his originally gray protoform was now black and white, given just enough time to imprint on his creator, for his spark to recognize Prime's.

"I have called you all here to request a favor," Prime said at the time, cradling his child who had remained a secret known only by the young medic, First Aid, Prime and Mirage. "I need to entrust the safety of this child to you all."

It was then how Mirage was appointed to join the crew of the Orion, the vessel designated to sneak the infant Prowl out of Cybertron and wander the universe in wait for Prime's call to bring him back, hopefully to a safer home. Before parting, Optimus Prime called Mirage to his private quarters where he released him of any obligations towards him, freeing him of the arranged union that had not yet been completed. "It's my hope that sometime, you'll find someone deserving of your spark and your love."

Mirage mulled over the time of the departure. He was familiar only with First Aid, who Prime had trusted to assist him in bringing his child to life. The noble had asked back then why First Aid and not Ratchet. Prime confided that he needed Ratchet in Cybertron, and in order to keep Prowl as safe as possible, he had to keep his existence a secret even from most of his closest friends. The sparkling was put in a forced stasis lock in order to keep his spark's signature hidden.

Alone among mechs he knew only by designation and passing glances, Mirage took to inhabit the cargo bay where Prowl's protoform was stored, keeping vigil over his Lord's baby. It was a lonely existence he chose to live, but he did not mind. His crew mates were all nice mechs but didn't push for much interaction with him, with the notable exception of a green mech that insisted on paying him company every now and then.

Hound's little visits to ensure Mirage was properly fueled and keep an optic on the sparkling grew in frequency over the deca-cycles. It was a nice gesture, and Mirage found he appreciated the company more than he had expected to. As Deca-cycles became Meta-cycles, a friendship began to blossom between them, Mirage could talk openly about anything, and Hound listened with genuine interest.

Mirage didn't know for sure when exactly their friendship shifted towards something else, sometimes he felt the mutual attraction had always been there, and just needed time to mature and bloom.

Mirage stroked a hand along the pod containing their lord's offspring, watching the little one whose life had been paused to keep him safe. In many aspects, Mirage felt he owed this sparkling for the taste of happiness he had been given. Had Prowl not been created, he would have never been sent along with the Orion's crew, Prime would have never released him of their engagement, and he would have never met his now bonded.

As a noble, Mirage had been brought to life with the ability to bend the light around him, creating illusions, and rendering himself invisible coded within his spark --An ability that he was able to pass down to another mech through spark bonding. Upon bonding, his ability was transferred and mutated within Hound's spark, granting the exceptionally gifted tracker the power to create holograms that surpassed by far those that could be achieved with in-built holographic devices.

But above all, Mirage found someone that loved him, someone that he himself loved. There was respect between each other, friendship, comradery, but specially, equality. While there was friendship and respect between Mirage and Prime, the noble mech had never been in equal terms with Optimus. He was, before anything, his Prime, his lord. Hound was his equal, his lover, his friend, his mate. Their duty was shared, their vows for the young life they protected were the same, their love existed upon the same foundation. Their lives were devoted to serve and protect the sparkling locked in stasis within his pod, but also devoted to one another now. He was no longer alone, no matter what, he would never be alone again.
