I am actually re-reading A Mighty Fortress as we speak. (Well... type.. and not as I type cause I'm awesome but juggling my hardback copy and my keyboard and reading it and the interwebs would be hard.)
It half drives me insane and half makes me pause what I am doing to figure the 'real' name out. It can be irritating, but it's a neat device to shorthand represent the lingustic drift of a world with universal spelling/literacy.
And the occasional giggle (such as Peter Sellers) makes it tolerable to me.
I was reading it at my desk when I came across that one. I sat there for a minute or so sounding it out until it hit me then I started giggling and repeating "Peter Sellers!" to myself. Thankfully my coworkers have learned to just not ask anymore.
