Metonomy as theology! ;)martinhesseliusJanuary 4 2011, 18:08:54 UTC
*chuckle* Some would argue, Muslims in particular, that was a step back to polytheism. But, yah, a lot of Biblical scholars agree with you on the emergence of Monotheism and/or Dualism.
Various medieval writers were very well aware of the "heroes become gods" thought-line, too. In the 13th century Snorri referenced it when he said Odin, et al, used to be chieftains; so did the 14th century author of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight when he said that Morgana la Fay was once thought to be a goddess.
Then again, Iceland's kristnitaka wasn't until CE 999-1000. Though, to be fair, both the Irish monks present in Iceland before the 9th century Norse settlement, as well as a fair number of the Norse settlers themselves, were Christian... even if some of them still sacrificed goats to Thor before going viking, according to the Laxdæla Saga! ;) And private pagan practice remained allowable, per the pronouncement by lawgiver Thorgeir Thorkelsson at the Alþing.
Heh. In Roman times, worry about making an unworthy person into a god inspired the Apocolocyntosis (divi Claudii) ("The Pumpkinification of (the Divine) Claudius")... (A recent Facebook note by me showed amusement at his fate to be constantly dropping his dice!)
And, yah, you portrayed that aspect of Vladimir well, and in good Norse... er, Rus fashion! (Paraphrasing: "Can I tempt you with this, Corvus?" *pause* "Can I tempt you? Would you like to grow closer to Caine, Vladimir?" YOU WERE BRILLIANT in how you portrayed that, by the way!)
from The Project Gutenberg EBook of Laxdaela Saga: http://txtr.com/#text/w68z9 And it is in my mind that you, Kjartan, will have a better faith when you return from Norway than you had when you came hither. Go now in peace and safety wheresoever you like from the meeting. For the time being you shall not be tormented into Christianity, for God says that He wills that no one shall come to Him unwillingly." Good cheer was made at the king's speech, though mostly from the Christian men; but the heathen left it to Kjartan to answer as he liked. Kjartan said, "We thank you, king, that you grant safe peace unto us, and the way whereby you may most surely draw us to take the faith is, on the one hand, to forgive us great offences, and on the other to speak in this kindly manner on all matters, in spite of your this day having us and all our concerns in your power even as it pleases you. Now, as for myself, I shall receive the faith in Norway on that understanding alone that I shall give some little worship to Thor the next winter when I get back to Iceland."

Why be closer to Caine when I already work for God? (and the arrangement of Go stones to illustrate the point) if I recall.
Who knew I'd make the same argument as Goldman Sachs, "we're doing gods work". Hmm...maybe Goldman Sachs *IS* on the Path of Night! Would explain a lot. =)
I miss some of those Elder RP moments with folks like you and others that got into what I'd call "elder theory"...just how crazy people alive for centuries/millenia might begin to think and develop ideas/philosophies that drove their action. I understand in the new cam they limit the age of characters, which I can understand to deal with everyone being way too old, ...but I think you lose a lot of the game when you take that out.
Now with the NPO back in play, what rule system are they using?
*chuckle*

Have you and I ever discussed Euhemerus (late fourth century BC)?

They're transitioning back to a version of the Old World of Darkness!
CCP also announced that the MMO will use OWOD (i.e., VtM), too:

LOL --
I never thought of that!
Though name-camping Corvus seems silly.
(Jann of the Rroma, now, though... ;) )
