A man once told me that he thought my drinking was 'political'.
A woman once told me that she knew the reason I drank was to be the life of the party. I told her that I drink at parties to stop myself crying, and this made me realise that perhaps other people don't do that?
In the recent past before she told me what she knew, I had dragged myself to a party in a park, in the dark. I silently wept. Someone poured me a drink without me even particularly asking. It did help with the crying (as Quaife once said, "I'm drinking so I don't cry"). This incident is a data point.
On a plane from Havana to Madrid, I let slip that I drink because I'm "so anxious".
