Magnesia

I feel that it'd be ridiculous if I didn't update before the end of the year; it isn't like a I don't have time.

As of December 20 of this year, I'm an Airman Trainee of the Air Force. Currently, I'm waiting for a call to let me know when one of the four jobs I selected is available and then I'll be off to basic training.

Going through all the processing was really weird. Seeing the mixing bowl of applicants refreshed my mind on the bigger picture that is 'the world'. Some people were re-enlisting and others were switching branches (Navy to Army, for example). Some scored amazingly high on the ASVAB (the required military aptitude test) and others scored above the bare minimum. Some were gregarious and friendly and others didn't speak much English (which left me dumbfounded).

Processing was an overnight endeavor and we were bussed to a nearby hotel. Girls stayed on one floor, guys on another-- two to a room. I roomed with a guy who was joining the Army. He wasn't much of a conversationalist but I was able to pry a few words from him. Taller white guy, looked about my age. I couldn't stop comparing his muscled arms to my own chicken wings. He looked militant. When asked which job he was applying for, he responded "Infantry".

"Infantry?" an eavesdropper chimed, "Where I come from, we call those 'Bullet Catchers'!" The guy chuckled and my roommate sort of nodded and smiled. Yet there was still this almost vacant look on his face which, to me, looked as if he was coming to terms with the hardships in his future.

After hours (we're talking from 4 in the morning 'till about 6 in the evening) of sitting around, answering questions, and watching reruns of King of the Hill and That 70's Show, I was sworn in and joined the Armed Forces. It hasn't particularly hit me yet (though I do suddenly feel like I'm being watched by FBI investigators 24/7).

All there's left is to wait.
Wait for a phone call.
A phone call to change my future.

Lol, oh boy...
