I So Wish I Had Neighbors Like These

Several high school students joined us during our Election Day stand out outside of the polls.  It is so cool to see this involvement and interest in the political process at an age before most of them can vote.  I think these students learn a lot as well, both the good and the bad that can come out in people, and hopefully they can see how to deal with it.

I started talking to one high school senior and found out she is interested in math and science, and has applied to MIT for an early decision.  She enjoys physics and in fact is interested in pursuing theoretical physics!  She said she liked the challenge posed by being a woman in a field still dominated by men.  What a wonderful attitude!  She was very nice, and easy to talk with.

I asked her what got her interested in campaigning, and she said, "Well first of all my parents are gay".  She has two moms, a 10th grade brother, and her parents just adopted two special needs girls, one about 7 and the other about 3.  Caitlyn said she and her brother were getting along better now because they had to share more responsibility with the arrival of their two new little sisters.  How cool is that!

The moms came to pick Caitlyn up, and this was the first gay couple I have met who have had kids.  I connected with these two women immediately, we share so much in common in trying to raise a family with all the issues that entails.  These women were wonderful, the loving and caring they felt for their kids shone through!  The fact that they were gay quickly left my mind as even a factor to ponder, they were just two wonderful parents trying to raise a family to the best of their abilities, and their abilities were awesome!  We would have such a good time if we were neighbors and we could share our experiences and our lives!  :)

If only the people who oppose gay marriage could see what a great family this was, no different than others trying their best to raise a family.  I would hope they would see that this family represents the very best of what the term "family values" has to offer.

I learned and grew so much during these few days on my sister's campaign; I am so fortunate to have had this experience.  Peace.  :)
