Afloat

It's 9 PM on July 3rd, I am on a 25 foot (7 m) boat, and gorgeous fireworks are exploding just about over my head...How did I get here?

Dena invited Sally and me out with her friend Craig, who has a boat docked in Rye, to see the fireworks from the American Yacht Club, the Shenorock Shore Club and one other beach club on Milton Point, offshore in Long Island Sound.

So off we cast, and Craig it turns out although a high school architecture teacher for the rest of the year, is a harbor patrol policeman in the summer, and so he takes us expertly out past the shoals, around Milton Point, and right under where the fireworks are to be.

An outstanding location, and I thanked him for the onshore breeze, so we were not covered in fireworks ash or enveloped in gunpowder smoke. :) They were going off just about over our heads, with all the booms and hissing of the rocket exhausts!

After it was over, we turned around to see several shows on Long Island. Most seemed to be on the south shore a little further away, but one was on the north shore NY City-wards of us, and it was a little miniature beauty.

Then we saw a big orange glow coming from LI, and what a fireworks that must be! Oops, it's the moon just past full, all orangey and smiley, rising as we watched, casting a line of light across the water...

On the ride home, the lights from the Throgs Neck and Whitestone (suspension) bridges looked like glowing diamond necklaces....
