ISU Artwork Up Close

Derrick Burnett has a painting in the cafe in Indianan State University's Cunningham Memorial Library titled "Visions of Blackness."

It is a montage in acrylic, of faces and more impressionistic people.

One face has something obstructing it's mouth. On it is written (and I transcribe here to to the best of my ability):

Seeing someone's head blown off
is nothing compared to seeing
someone die off ghetto
syndrome.
I CAN'T BECAUSE
I'M BLACK. (K is backwards)
Stop the Niggativity/Start Creativity

I like it. Not the whole painting, but the message painted in it. It's not the nicest thing to look at when it comes to University artwork, which is why it is probably tucked away in this little corner of the cafe. But I like the message.

I wonder how many people see that when they look at it.
