prompts: badcompany_muse 019. Good and Evil

Travelling with the Doctor, Martha knows, leads to a sharp black and white view of good and evil. The Doctor's good. The Master's evil; so're the Daleks and the Sontarans and any number of other aliens. Martha used to be firmly planted on the side of good - and, as far as she's concerned, she still is. The Doctor, if he saw her with a sonic blaster strapped to her belt and daggers in her boots (one for each heart) might beg to differ. He doesn't approve of violence. She knows it's necessary for hunting down the Master.

That's her goal in life now, chasing him throughout time and space, making sure that he doesn't get the chance to destroy any other planets. It's an intergalactic game of cat and mouse - though she's not always sure which one of them is the cat and which one's the mouse. She's left her family behind in order to protect them, left UNIT when they tried to call her off her chase, abandoned Jack and the Doctor when they called her mad and obsessed; she thinks she's just single-minded.

The Master, she thinks, enjoys the chase - for some reason, he's actually fond of her, in a weird way that only the Master can manage. She has the distinct feeling that he sees her as a mildly amusing pet, and that's why she's still alive, why she's allowed to keep after him. As for her - well, she's just glad that the Master underestimates her and her abilities. He was killed by a human once, and it can happen again - and again, and again, and however many times it takes till he's dead for good.

She doesn't view murder as inherently evil. She used to, even while she was walking the Earth. But now - her views have shifted. She knows that eliminating the Master is necessary, that he can't be left alive to wreak havoc on the universe. She can't let him hurt anybody else like he hurt the ones she loves. Martha's not sure why nobody else understands this; it seems like perfectly logical reasoning to her. If a dog is rabid, it ought to be put down - and the Master is foaming at the mouth.
