I've been thinking a bit about the slightly Pollyanna-ish blog posts and news articles I'm seeing about how we've almost survived 2020 and 2021 will be so much better. I don't think it will be like flipping a light-switch, and I don't think everything will be okay, but I do have a bit of cautious optimism ( Read more... )

Well put, Marta. I agree that this year has brought to the fore just how untenable so many aspects of our society are for so many people, as well as showing which workers are truly essential (certainly not me, that's for sure).

A smaller, more specific-to-me example is that remote learning has made the K-12 educators I work with realize that a lot of their students don't have adequate executive functioning, time management, and prioritization skills for them to work really independently. They've always kind of known that--it's why a lot of kids (especially first-generation kids) don't succeed in college or vocational education, but it's really made them determined to start explicitly teaching these skills early, like in grades 7-8. In general it's been pretty inspiring to see the heroic efforts that teachers and admins have put into making sure all their students have internet access, meals, and services, and that they stay connected to school.
