So sad. . .

Just spoke with wackdaddy  's cousin. He got burned this week, from his knees down. He got first and second  degree burns when his boiler water hose exploded on him, both  legs & right foot. An ambulance  took him to Cornell Burn Center in Manhattan, where they said: "Oh, it's not that bad, COMPARED TO WHAT WE USUALLY SEE". However, we all know burns hurt, ( Read more... )

I'm really sorry to hear this, and I hope he'll recover ok. My thoughts are with you -- and him and all your family. It's all a bit scary, and I do know he's hurting.

I also hope Claire sees this (I'm going to direct her, but she's a a clergy spouses retreat this weekend, so it will be after she gets home). Her father died from burns. He was pouring gasoline on something - I don't remember what - and it caught fire, burning him severely. He lived for about that same amount of time as your grandmother lived. I'm thinking that possibly you might find a kindred soul in Claire, and it would help to talk to her some....

Ray nearly got burned when he was trying to light our water heater a few years ago. He used to be in the propane business, so this is a routine task for him. However this time there was an unexpected flare. He managed to get back, but still lost some hair and had a tiny burn on his face, but didn't need to go to the doctor. The scary thing was that I was visiting Claire at the time and he was alone in the house. All of this made me think....

My aunt Sally also had burns from "ties" of her bathrobe which hung down onto the top burners of the stove as she prepared breakfast. We were visiting at the time, and I still remember her blood curdling scream as she dropped to the floor to put it out. She had to go to the hospital, but her burns were not life threatening, thanks to her dropping to the ground to put it out.

This incident - and Ray's - is always in the back of my mind - especially when I'm at the stove or near any "hot spot".

Thanks for sharing that information about Claire. . . we are attracted to certain people for a reason. She and I have always found it easy to talk. (Thanks to you, for sharing.) I have to be extra careful while I'm at the stove too, because of my mastectomy, I have no feeling on my left breast and torso. I've burned the skin by leaning too close on a hot pan, but thankfully not done worse than that. Always makes me think of Robin Williams in Mrs. Doubtfire. :)
