Obviously, the Martian is not very good with the whole human interaction thing. In fact, that is what made him first realize that he must be from another planet. So, after years and years of waiting in vain for the mothership to pick him up, he decided to learn just enough of it to get by.
Enters the internet. Now, the Martian does not feel any less awkward in online communication. It's just that the time he needs to figure out appropriate responses is not quite as obvious. In fact, it turns out that of the Earthlings the Martian felt least awkward with, quite a few he first talked to on the internet. He figures that if people who meet him in person already have a positive impression, they will look past all the awkwardness for long enough to give him time to adjust.
Now one Earthling the Martian finds himself adjusting to surprisingly quickly - for a Martian, anyway - convinced him to give this site a try. So here he is. And while he's here, he figures that he might just as well use this medium as a possible way of reporting his findings about Earthling society and behaviour to his supervisors. Because although he thinks that they might have some kind of direct link into his brain, he can't be completely sure, can he?
what?
