"If you wait for the perfect moment when all is safe and assured, it may never arrive. Mountains will not be climbed, races won, or lasting happiness achieved."
-Maurice Chevalier
The snow was getting heavier now, swirling down in great flurries over the silent city.

Hyukjae sighed, letting out all the stress and frustrations he experienced today as faint, misted breath from his pale lips. He watched as a single snowflake floated before him, the city lights making its intricate details more pronounced, before gently landing on the ground. Soon, more followed.

The roads were empty, still immersed in the darkness that came before the late December dawn. Naked trees dotted along the edge of the roads, creaking silently under the weight of the snow laying innocently on their branches that slid onto the ground at the sigh of the wind.

The lone figure cloaked in a thick jacket and a red scarf watched as light slowly tinted the once dark skies with shades of amber, the lights seeping through the thick branches and unto the ground, reflecting off the snow and making it glisten with blinding whiteness.

His eyes fluttered closed and he buried his cold hands into his pockets. He listened. Slowly, sounds became known to his ears. In the distance, roads came to life. He listened as the birds’ fluttered, startled form their perches high up in the snowy branches as children ran from their houses. He listened as the children shouted excitedly, hastily pulling on scarves and coats and yelling hurried goodbyes to their parents. Soon the soft snow which had lain perfect and untouched on the pavements minutes ago was overwhelmed by foot-shaped imprints on its ashen surface.

There was movement beside him. “I knew you’d be here,” a voice murmured, barely audible above the sounds emitting from the wakening city.

Hyukjae smiled and opened his eyes. Beside him Donghae sniffled and snuggled his chin in his blue knitted scarf, then turned to him and smiled.

“How?” Hyukjae asked turning his head. He watched as snowflakes floated from above, snowflakes that were almost the same colour as his hair.

Donghae shrugged, still smiling. “You always come here whenever you want to think,” he replied.

The blonde smiled and shook his head, turning to the front. “Stalker,”

Donghae pouted. “Am not,” then added in a murmur, that Hyukjae barely heard. “- just wanted to see if you were okay,”

The dancer felt warmth envelope his cold cheeks and he swallowed a smile, his heart beginning to race. “I’m fine,” he murmured.

At that Donghae smiled. “Good,” then he chuckled. “Your nose is red,”

Hyukjae turned and scrunched up his nose. “So is yours, Rudolph,” they both laughed.

The younger smiled and looked around. He sighed. “Now I know why you come here to think,” he whispered his brown eyes thoughtful. The sounds of the city began to subside; only the soft chirps of the birds remained. He watched as the soft rays of the sun landed on the surface of the snow-covered lake before him, his mind elsewhere.

Hyukjae, unnoticed to the other, was watching, noticing the way Donghae’s face relaxed. He swallowed and turned away, his heart beating fast.

“Hyuk?”

“Hm?”

“What were you thinking?” the dancer heard Donghae whisper curiously. Donghae turned to him, those chocolate brown eyes full of intent. “Before I came here?”
Hyukjae averted his eyes from those brown orbs and focused on the soft snowflakes which were still floating from above. Time seemed to freeze, the snow slowly falling around them, chilling everything on its path. Yet those large, russet orbs which belonged to Donghae seemed to contain fire which warmed each and every fibre of Hyukjae’s being.

Hyukjae swallowed, turning his whole body to face the other.

“Hae, I -,” he began nervously, not meeting his intense gaze.

Donghae bit his bottom lip, trying to stop himself from smiling. Then to the anchovy’s surprise, the fish took a step forward, closing the small gap between them. His breath hitched and his eyes instinctively closed as he saw the other’s face close to his, those eyes, those mesmerizing auburn eyes an inch away.

At this time, his heart was threatening to burst from his chest. After a few moments and more than a few mental battles, he realized nothing was happening. Well, except for the fact that his nose was getting warmer.

He dared to open his eyes and what he saw made him swallow.

Donghae, eyes closed, pink lips forming a smile, was nuzzling his nose against his. That explained the warmth.

Donghae hummed. “You’re too cute sometimes and you don’t even realise,” he whispered, eyes still closed, too quiet but Hyukjae still heard it clearly.
Donghae opened his eyes and Hyukjae lost himself in those brown pools. “Say something,” he whispered, his warm breath ghosting over Hyukjae’s pale lips and the dancer felt the hairs on his back stand.

“I -,” The corners of Donghae’s lips twitched and he leaned forward, meeting Hyukjae’s pale lips.

Hyukjae froze, then closed his eyes, but the lips were gone as fast as it had come.

Hyukjae opened his eyes only to see Donghae smile cheekily. “You?” he whispered, still smiling.

“I love you,” was Hyukjae’s murmured reply, his eyes not meeting Donghae’s, his heartbeat louder than his words.

Those words wiped the cheeky smile of Donghae’s lips only to be replaced by a gentle smile.

Donghae lifted the dancer’s chin and guided the other’s eyes to look at his. Then he smiled at seeing those big, brown eyes and leaned forward to give Hyukjae a soft peck on the lips.

“Took you long enough,” he whispered, as the snow continued to float lightly around them, but the pair was too lost in each other’s eyes to care.
