angelfish; kyuhae
rating: PG
in which donghae has magical powers (not really, but he likes to think he does.) and kyuhyun needs them.
alternatively, in which kyuhyun learns 'a miracle'
a/n: au of sorts, playing with the "what if?" theory. excuse the strangely written. :/
(oh, and I know it was only like 80 days in the hospital for Kyuhyun. it's basically like, him getting better and them just keeping him in the hospital to try to "cure" his 'problem'.) also i've never written Donghae, so there's that fail.
Donghae is good at cheering people up, everyone says that. When Yesung couldn't find Ddangkkoma, Donghae was there by his side making all sorts of funny faces and (horridly) unfunny inside jokes just to make Yesung's frown go away for even five minutes. Ryeowook heard of his grandmother about to pass; and Donghae attempted to make him smile over their extravagant dinner by telling him a story about a dragon and fish and everything that came to mind. He's cheered up Henry when he's caught the other crying backstage over something; and Henry's called him angelfish. (He still doesn't get it, but he googled it one day out of curiosity and decided they were cute, so all was well) He helped Siwon out when he couldn't find his cellphone by calling it, declaring it lost and then buying a new one out of his own pocket.
So it's no wonder that they have him go to hospitals, to try to cheer the sick up. He gets these assignments ("In reality, they're just a way for me to make friends," he explains to Heechul, who shakes his head with a raised eyebrow and goes back to Cyworlding) time to time, and he always packs a small suitcase with him, because he's never sure if he's going to have to stay the night.
He gets into the building (really, they drain so much of his energy, but he has to keep smiling, right? Do angels frown?), smiling at the nice receptionist noona. She smiles back and hands him a piece of paper with a room number written on it - "He's about your age," she begins with a smile, "instead of making you read about him, why don't you get to know him?"
Donghae nods, going down the hallway - he's been here enough to know it like the back of his hand (or finding Heechul's secret stash of food). He opens the door and calls out a familiar "Hello~", and gets no response (oh, maybe they were sleeping? oops.) in return.
However a figure looks up from the hospital bed almost warily, clearly exhausted.
"I'm Lee Donghae," he begins, crossing over to the male's bedside, smile brightening. (though it's hard, to keep smiling in a place like this; really.) "What's your name?"
No response from the male. Donghae frowns - maybe he's deaf? So he leans in really close to the patient's face, repeating himself - "Name? Yours? Is? What?"
The male gives him a horribly (adorable) cross look before making a writing motion with a lithe hand; and Donghae rummages into his fish-shaped bag for a notebook (with turtles on it; the patient raises his eyebrows at it).
My name is Cho Kyuhyun, he writes in neat tidy hangeul, and vageuly Donghae finds himself jealous; And I can't talk.
"Why can't you talk?" Donghae blinks at the other boy, obviously confused. Even Kibum talked, and he never said much in the first place.
Accident. is all Kyuhyun writes, fingers and hand shaking from the memory of it all, it...
Donghae pauses a moment, looking at the other as a light of understanding passes between them.
For once, he really isn't sure what to say, and so lapses into silence, looking everywhere but at Kyuhyun. Meanwhile, Kyuhyun cries remembering it all (but no sound comes out; and that's what makes Donghae's heart hurt the most. Crying without a sound is one of the most deafening things he's ever heard in all his years of living.)

He comes back to visit the next day; and they get off on a better foot. Donghae learns that Kyuhyun is just a bit younger than him, and that he also speaks Chinese. Kyuhyun learns that Dongahe (is just a little wierd) loves family and laughing, food and fish, and he always has to count the stars before he falls asleep. Donghae is also amazing at telling stories, and Kyuhyun's strangely good at giving advice.
They never talk about the accident; whenever Donghae brings it up, it just makes Kyuhyun shake and lapse into that painful silence. And somehow both of them are fine with that; fine with everything (and each other, though they never admit that).
One day, Donghae is doodling fish on Kyuhyun's omlette with ketchup (you are so weird, do you know that, hyung? Kyu wrote, shaking his head and (silently, everything's silent with him) laughing), when Kyuhyun makes a frantic scrambling motion.
Hey, hyung?
"Hmmm?" Donghae looks up from his shark (that looks suspiciously like Shindong) drawing chasing a Yesung-turtle while a Heechul-octopus cheers.
Do you think I'm being punished for something?
"Kyu, why would you say that?"
Because...in the accident, and at this Donghae freezes, since it's a sensitive topic. He puts the omlette to the side; food can wait right now. In the accident, I was the only one...really badly hurt. Leeteuk-hyung, was also pretty badly hurt, but he got out of the hospital...and I'm still here. And...I can't talk.
"Did the glass do something with your voice? Did you swallow it?" Kyuhyun just stares at him, everything and nothing running through his head at once. (His weirdness never ceases to amaze him.)
Yes, Donghae, yes it did, Kyuhyun sighs, and rolls over to the other side. Donghae figures breakfast will come later, and so rests his head on the bed.
"Want me to sing you a lullaby?"
No. is all Kyuhyun writes, and he almost finishes it with because i can't sing along with you, i can't duet with you, i can't do anything, i'm useless.
The older boy can't take no for an answer; and so sings anyways. His voice is quiet so as not to wake the other patients, and Kyuhyun sighs even deeper and listens, lipping along.
It's a perfect duet.

A few months pass and soon Kyuhyun can walk again; albeit shakily. Donghae doesn't visit as frequently now, but Kyuhyun is still grateful for his company when he does. (After all, hospitals are creepy and boring)
When he visits now, Donghae is always talking about the pretty noona he encounters, ones that whisper "oppa" to him in passing; and Kyuhyun finds himself jealous. Kyuhyun pauses, pondering something, a scowl overtaking his features; slowly blossming into the sinking realization. (It can't be.)
"Cheer up, Kyu," Donghae chirps, gently poking his cheek. "Let's go out for tangpyeongchae or something. I'll treat!"

Halfway through dinner, he realizes something:
There's a high (and good) chance he most definitely loves Donghae.
They eat and eat and eat and spend a copious amount of money ("Heechul-hyung owes me anyways, he can pay the bill," is Donghae's excuse for when he pulls out a card) at the resturant, and then take a walk afterwards, sitting on a park bench.
Hyung, how many stars do you think there are, I know you count them, Kyuhyun teases, giving the other a soft smile.
"One," Donghae replies without missing a beat, turning to the other and smiling.
Impossible the maknae scribbles furiously, scratching out a few misspellings here and there, there's at least a few thousand up in that sky right now, and---
He's cut off by Donghae's lips pressing against his in a deeply gentle kiss, one of his hands securing gently around Kyu's lithe wrist.
The kiss goes on for a while; varying pressures (and Donghae can do some quite amazing things with his tongue) before he lets go, staring into Kyuhyun's eyes.
Kyuhyun opens his mouth and lets the first word in almost 100 days spill from his lips.
"Donghae."
Donghae stares at him like he has lobsters crawling out of his ears. "W-what?"
"Donghae," Kyuhyun whispers again, kissing him back even harder with tears in his eyes, "Love."
"H-how..."
"Miracle," is the only thing he says, smiling and squeezing Donghae's hand and tugging at it with a smile.
Maybe Kyuhyun's the angel, and not Donghae.
After all, Kyuhyun got the glass out of his throat (or maybe, just maybe, he put the trauma behind him with pills and therapy; but getting glass out just sounds so much better).
Kyuhyun smiles and links his fingers through Donghae's hand, "Weird fish."
"Angel fish," he corrects him, but Kyuhyun shakes his head and makes an annoyed face. He looks exhausted, and so Donghae brings him back to his shared apartment with Heechul.
They sleep curled together, and it's all Donghae ever needs Kyuhyun to say (for now, at least).
