Things I Ate At the Fair: 2011

Sep 08, 2011 09:18

Proper post coming soon, with like, words and stuff, but I wanted to get this posted up while it was still vaguely recent. ;) So, as always, I took a picture of everything I ate at the fair from both days I was there. Before you think me a total glutton, do bear in mind that with the exception of beverages and Pronto Pups, everything was split between at least two people. In 2011, the things I ate at the fair numbered 13, including 3 pronto pups, 4 new foods (3 of which were new to the fair), and 2 different kinds of bacon. In summation: yum.

Day One:

First Pronto Pup of the fair! Always the first and (spoiler alert) last thing I eat every year. Different from a regular corn dog in that it's a flour-based, savory pancake batter, rather than corn meal, so it's lighter and crispier and oh-so-wonderful.

Chicken Fried Bacon at Giggles, served with a maple cream dipping sauce.

Sweet Corn Ice Cream at the Blue Moon Dine-In Theater. New this year, and an instant classic. It is unbelievably delicious.

Horchata at El Sol. Not bad, but a little sweet for my tastes, and a lot of sediment left at the bottom that was ungood. Also new this year.

Cheese Curds! A staple for some, but I often find them just too much, so we don't actually always get them. This year though, had to get some of that cheesy goodness.

Day Two:

Another Pronto Pup. Because they are my favourite.

Big Fat Bacon! Glazed with maple syrup and then grilled and served on a stick. Ron Swanson approved.

Danielson & Daughters Onion Rings. A classic staple that's been at the fair since 1956, but until this year, something I'd never tried. Definitely a cut above your average onion ring. They're lighter than air, with an almost tempura-like batter. So, so good. New to me this year, but definitely something I'll be getting again and again from here on out.

Cinnamon Roasted Almonds. I always get some of these, mainly to bring home, but they're at their best fresh and hot from the roaster right when I get them.

Salad on a Stick, from Giggles. Little caprese skewers served over a bed of wild rice and cranberry salad. New this year, and really good. A nice break from the fryer. ;)

More Sweet Corn Ice Cream, because it is the best.

Risotto Poppers (on a stick!). Cheese and mushroom risotto, balled, battered, fried and skewered. A favourite since 2009.

Last Pronto Pup of the day, and the fair. Le sigh.
