Tangled, I loved. I kind of suspected I would, but put off watching it for ages, because I have been so supremely disappointed with Disney animated features for more than a decade now, and I really really wanted to like this one, as Rapunzel is one of my favourite fairy tales. Luckily there was no disappointment to be found! I thought it was sweet and funny and surprisingly kickass. I even liked a lot of the music.. the singing wasn't my favourite, but it wasn't bad, and the score part of it was really pretty. Definitely one to own.

Tree of Life... was less of a resounding success for me. There were parts of it that I loved. I think Malick's treatment of the human/family element was lovely, bordering on genius. With no real plot, it was full of story and life. But I found the extended sequences of lava and light and frickin' dinosaurs to be tedious and pretentious. I feel like the point of it was clear (at least as I interpreted it.. that it was to demonstrate that life goes on.. continents keep shifting.. people [and dinosaurs] come and go with no real impact on the Earth), but that it wasn't a particularly unique point or one that needed to be made. I'm used to a certain amount of ponderous shots of nature in Malick's work, and I liked when those came into play through the point of view of the characters, but there were segments that just felt endless and pointless to me, and it detracted from the overall emotional impact of the film. (Similarly, the semi-frame of the adult Jack's point of view felt unneeded.)
