Ephraim G. Pancakes Top 10 Albums of 2003

Mar 18, 2004 22:20

gaynotgay and friends were supposed to have a "Best Albums of 2003" party/discussion/most likely an argument...but it never happened. I was waiting to post my official picks in hopes that we would actually get together...but it never happened. so here it is...i hope Josh is very offended.

10] The Postal Service - Give Up

this album brings to mind so many amazing memories from the beginning of the year...namely my first few months at the gaynotgay household, jon kraft, and...DANCING! DANCING! DANCING! (for those of you who went to the orlando show...you know exactly what i mean). death cab can go somewhere else.

9] Ephemera - Air

Three luscious ladies from Norway playing sweet and tender hi-fi pop music.

8] Azure Ray - Hold on Love

Azure Ray remind me a tiny bit of The Cocteau Twins...and The Cocteau Twins are amazing.

7] Iron & Wine - The Sea and The Rhythm

I enjoy this ep more than the Creek full length...perhaps it's because of all the Christ references, or maybe the whole sea theme...or maybe it's the line "the milk from your breasts is on my lips." Sam Beam you are a beautiful beautiful man.

6] Sufjan Stevens - Greetings from Michigan: The Great Lake State

Along with Danielson Family (who help fill out the sound on this album) and The Half-Handed Cloud (also of the Asthmatic Kitty label)...Sufjan Stevens is making the most creative (and good) music of the Christian persuasion. Pitchfork rated this album at #3 for their Top 50 Albums of 2003...but Baptiste says it's overrated. Good thing Baptiste is an a-hole.

5] Kenna - New Sacred Cow

Despite a number of crappy things associated with this album including...Fred Durst, the fiasco with the release of this album (which was supposed to come out in 2002), and the often terrible lyrical content...I actually like this album a lot. Chad Hugo's beats probably save this album from being a total disaster.

4] Bonnie "Prince" Billy - Master and Everyone

I've liked a few Oldham songs here and there before...but never any of his full albums. This one on the otherhand is flawless. Take a look at the picture to the left and you'll understand why.

3] Architecture in Helsinki - Fingers Crossed

Electronic Renaissance + Fox in the Snow = Architecture in Helsinki. Twee Pop in its finest hour.

2] The Decemberists - Her Majesty...The Decemberists

Dear The Decemberists...
Thank you for a) not sounding like Oasis anymore...b) writing one of the best albums i've ever heard.
love, ephraim
ps. can i date your drummer?

1] Waltham - Permission to Build

I don't care that this band completely ripped off Rick Springfield...I also don't care that these guys are a bunch of 30 year old dude-bros looking to date college chics...and I'm especially GLAD that all of my friends abhor it. THIS IS MY FAVORITE ALBUM OF 2003!
