There was a disembodied knock, then Bel shimmered in. "You rang?" he said.

"Hey, thanks for doing this," Veronica said, smiling at him.

"I just don't get why you're going with Dick," Bel said.

[marsheadtilt]

Veronica shrugged. "He asked. I felt bad for him so I figured why not."

"Awfully generous of you," Bel said. But he was actually thinking that maybe Veronica was so desperate for a daddy for her baby that Dick qualified . . . as bizarre as it seemed.

"I know that Dick and I have had our differences, but I like to think that we can be friends despite that," Veronica said. "Hell, he never tried to kill me, unlike certain other friends I could name," she teased.

"You're going to hold that over me for the rest of your life, aren't you?" Bel said with an exaggerated sigh.

"Who me? I'm the queen of not holding unnecessary grudges," Veronica said, though she was unable to do so with a straight face.

"Uh huh," Bel said. "Bel, lift this heavy thing. Bel, peel me a grape. Bel, shimmer me to a booty call."

"This is SO not a booty call," Veronica said. "I made it quite clear to Dick that there would be no sex."

"I didn't think you'd go there," Bel said. He looked Veronica over. "You're looking pretty good, though." She wasn't even showing yet.

"Thanks," Veronica said, having no idea what he was thinking. "And, no, I made that mistake once and once was enough."

So it was twice, but that was irrelevant.

"Everyone makes mistakes," Bel said, thinking she meant sleeping with Logan. "You just have to deal with the consequences when you do."

"Exactly," Veronica agreed, referring to dealing with the fallout of Dick cheating on Annette with her. "That's a big part of the reason that I'm doing this."

"Are you sure that's a good idea?" Bel said. Dick wasn't a completely bad guy, but he didn't seem good father material.

"Not really," Veronica admitted. "But as long as no one slaps me, I'll call the night a success."
