Hearst College - Tuesday Evening

Dec 13, 2006 00:12

Veronica was hanging out in her room, going over all the notes she had gathered thus far in the case she was investigating. She probably should have been studying for finals, but with the reports of another rape on campus, she figured the investigating took precedence.

Her conversation with Walter in the cafeteria hadn't changed her mind on things at all, and she figured she'd given herself plenty of time to make sure she wasn't overreacting, so Nadia tried calling Veronica again.

"Pick up this time, okay?" she said to the ring.

"Mars," Veronica answered her phone, not looking at the caller ID.

"There you are!" Nadia didn't think before blurting out. "I ought to fly out to California just to mallet you! Are you okay?!"

"I'm fine," Veronica said, blinking at her phone. "Why would you mallet me?"

"Should I start a list? To start with, why didn't you answer your phone this weekend? I tried to call on Sunday."

"Because my boyfriend was visiting me and I only see him once a month if I'm lucky," Veronica said. "Is something wrong?"

Nadia made an odd sort of strangled noise as she reigned in her temper again.

"Okay . . . I'm glad you have a boyfriend and I'm sorry you don't get to spend time with him that often, but what if it had been a big emergency? I couldn't get ahold of you!" Deep breath. "And as for what's wrong, you and Marty are keeping secrets from me. And I want to know why."

"People have the direct number for my dorm room if there's an emergency and I can't be reached by cell," Veronica said. "As for me and Marty keeping secrets, is this about Bel?"

"Only as far as that's what the secret was about. And I don't have the number for your dorm room. And that doesn't make any sense, you can't take your dorm room phone with you, can you? And--" Another deep breath, and her voice got smaller, less angry. "Why didn't you guys tell me anything?"

"I thought I included it in an email when I moved in," Veronica said. "Sorry. As for why we didn't tell you anything, there was nothing to tell. We were taking precautionary measures that, fortunately or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it, ended up being a necessity."

"Precautionary measures which you never mentioned anything about. Did you know about all this when I was fighting with him? And remember what happened last time you and Marty decided you didn't have to tell me something about Bel or any other student at the school who might be bad enough to warrant, oh, a frickin' spell to remove half of their identity? Robot spewing moral garbage and glitter! NQuil! Me, apparently almost getting fried! Remember?"

Veronica sighed. "And that's precisely why I didn't tell anyone but Marty. We weren't sure what was going on with Bel or if the potion would ever need to be used. I trusted Marty to have the best judgment of if it needed to be used or not. I didn't want to cause a witch hunt for no reason and I didn't want anyone hesitating if something happened that required its use. Marty was the only person I trusted to do all that."

Well, that was it, wasn't it. Her explanation. Veronica didn't trust her.

Her voice went cold. "I see. Fine. Whatever."

"I did what I had to do," Veronica said. "I'm sorry if you don't like that."

"No, that's fine. That's what it's all about, right? Finding out what kind of people your family really are."

And she hung up the phone.
