The first time Rose meets Sam Tyler, it's 2004, and she hears the doorbell ringing. Jimmy's gone (out somewhere - she doesn't quite know where, and she's afraid to ask).
She opens the door, and the first thing she sees is the police car parked out front.
"Oh my God," she says, before she notices the man standing off to the side a little. He doesn't really look like a policeman - too corporate, in the nice suit and tie, his face too kind. But you can never tell.
"I swear, my mum didn't send you here, did she? Jimmy didn't do anything wrong!" she says, and is about to close the door, when the man says, "Wait!"
"What?" she asks, and leans on the doorway, watching the police car with an air of apprehension.
"Your mother did send me, but I'm off duty," he says, and smiles a little. "I'm your cousin - Sam Tyler -" he extends a hard and she shakes it, a bit warily. "I was up here in London for business, and I stopped by to talk to Jackie a little, and she asked me to come over and talk to you."
Rose sighs, but opens the door further. "You better come get a cup of tea, then. Mum'll kill me if she finds out I didn't offer, at least."
She walks to the little kitchen, and Sam follows her, watches in silence as she makes the tea. They both sit at the tiny kitchen table, and Rose hopes that he won't mention the mess.
"Cousins?" she says. "Mum's never mentioned you."
Sam shrugs, and sips his tea. "After Pete dies, we kind of lost touch. I've been feeling a little guilty about that lately. I liked your mum, and your dad was always my favorite relative."
"You knew my dad well, then?" she asks, and leans forward, her head now full of questions for this stranger. "What was he like?"
Sam's face lights up. "Oh, he was brilliant. Came to visit me sometimes, when I was a kid, and he'd always have the best birthday presents. Great at parties, too."
She can see, finally, a source of information, and she's about to ask him another question, when he changes the subject.
"Rose, your mum's really worried about you," he says.
She rolls her eyes. Of course, Mum's worried about her. But everything's fine. She's overreacting.
"I don't know what's going on," says Sam.
"Yeah, you don't," says Rose, and she slumps down in her chair.
Sam nods as if he was expecting this, and that infuriates her. "Right. But there's one thing I do know - your mum loves you. She's worried about you because you haven't spoken to her in such a long time. Just give her a call."
He stands. "I have to go - I really shouldn't have stopped by here at all, but I owed Jackie."
He walks out of the kitchen, and back to the door.
"Goodbye," says Rose, almost a little wistfully. She doesn't get to see relatives often, and she's sad to see this tenuous link to her past broken.
"Goodbye, Rose," he says, and pauses. "One more thing. Don't waste your life here. I've seen plenty of people throw their lives away, and you deserve better than all of this. Think about it."
And he leaves, closing the door behind him.
Rose stands in the hallway for a minute before pulling her cell phone out of her pocket. She has a call to make.
