Canadian politics? PREPARE FOR CAPSLOCK.

All right, well done Americans, you keep eating up your well-deserved slice of Hope Pie. We'll just hang around up here SELF-DESTRUCTING.

Cause, guys,Canadian politics has gone from mildly interesting and generally pretty clean to being BATSHIT FUCKING INSANE.

Doing a quick rundown of the situation is pretty hard if you don't understand how the Canadian political system works, but I'll give it a shot. In Canada, we don't vote for a leader, we vote for a Member of Parliament to represent our district in Parliament. The party with the most seats in Parliament generally gains control of the government. After our last election, the Conservative governement, while retaining power, did not achieve a majority government (that is, they don't have more than 50% of the seats in Parliament.) The three other parties represented within Parliament - the Liberals, NDP, and Bloc Quebecois - each have a handful of seats and have, combined, a majority within Parlimanet. However, they exist as different parties, so their seats are split along party lines, giving Conservatives a relative hold over the Canadian Parliament. So, that's that.

However, following the proposal of the Conservative party's economic plan, the other parties got REALLY MAD and rejected it. This combined with a number of other itchy positions supported by the Conservatives inspired these three parties - the Liberals, NDP, and Bloc - to create a coalition government. This means that all their seats - remember, a majority when combined - are combined into one unified party, now with control over Parliament. This is not illegal. It is absurd, but it is not illegal. Right now we're waiting for our Governor General - an unelected representative of the British government (oh yes, you read that right) - to make a decision to either ask the Opposition (this Frankenstein creature of a "Progressive Coalition") to form a government, or to dissolve parliament and call another wonderful election.

Still with me? No? All right.

NOW MY TAKE ON THE ISSUE.

Harper made mistakes. Initiating a proposal to stop public employees striking was actually fundamentally retarded - particularly since they JUST ACCEPTED AND SIGNED A FOUR YEAR CONTRACT, CHRIST WHAT WERE YOU THINKING. His fiscal plan, while effectual, was weak. However, after the criticisms of his plan surfaced, he began creating a new economic policy to inspire the growth Liberals, NDP, and the Bloc seem to think is magically possible in a time of (now official) global recession. He made mistakes. He will attempt to rectify them. That's how a new government works.

Don't get me wrong. The Liberals, NDP, and the Bloc are perfectly legally capable of toppling Harper's government with a coalition. But just because it's legal doesn't mean it's right.

My thoughts?

The coalition is nothing but a HASTILY FORMED, POWER-HUNGRY, OPPORTUNISTIC CON.

The Liberals and NDP have SOLD OUT everything they held as ideals. Though I didn't agree with their politics, I RESPECTED THEIR PARTIES, I respected their idealism. No longer. In my opinion, the Bloc is nothing but a governmentally sanctioned white-collar TERRORIST ORGANISATION. The very fact that the Liberals and the NDP - CANADIAN POLITICAL PARTIES - want to work together with a group who WANTS TO TEAR CANADA APART (QUITE LITERALLY) is, to me, possibly the most disgusting display of power-mongering I have ever seen. It's nothing but a grab at power! Fuck a stable Canadian economy, fuck a government that does something, FUCK THE PEOPLE WE WANT POWER. I've always known the NDP to be absolutely the worst of the worst, vote whores in the most literal sense, selling their seats to whomever gives them the most POWER in Parliament. They have 15% of the vote and 90% of the power. But the Liberals? A party I saw as a viable alternative if Harper let me down. Working with the Bloc. It's fucking disgusting.

I will say it again: THEY ARE FORMING A GOVERNMENT WITH A PARTY WHO LITERALLY WANT TO DESTROY CANADA.

Not only that, but WHO WILL TAKE POWER? Dion? The man who got the LEAST SEATS IN THE HISTORY OF THE LIBERAL PARTY and who is LEAVING POLITICS BECAUSE HIS PARTY HAVE NO CONFIDENCE IN HIM AS A LEADER? Or maybe Jack Layton, representative of a party that got 17% of the vote! Or maybe Gilles Duceppe, whose party (don't laugh) WANTS TO SEPARATE FROM CANADA. Yes! Yes, I want ALL OF THEM, ACTUALLY!

Is this what's best for Canadians? We voted for the Members of Parliament to best represent our ridings within Parliament, to best fight for our voices in our democratic system. And now, we're waiting for an unelected British royal figurehead to decide if an unelected political party will gain control of government. This is not democracy. This is a horror film. This is my fucking wonderful country being shit on by assholes who want nothing but power.

Oh God how I wish I was making this up.

I have never in my life felt frustration THIS TANGIBLE. I've always considered my democratic duty to discuss politics with people, open my mind, analyse the issues, and vote with my head. The exasperation of seeing the government torn apart by these douchebags is enough to make me physically ill. It's such a transparent CON GAME I can't conceivably understand why anyone could possibly support a coalition government. I'm frustrated enough that I keep thinking: "What can I do? How can I stop this insanity?"

I'm telling you right now. If Canada is thrown into another election, I am going to actively campaign for the Conservative party. In my riding, in my University, in my country. I am going to work with them to fight this absurd coalition joke of a political process. I'm so sick of his the Liberals and NDP have been treating this country, abusing the political system for their own gains. I just can't take it.

To quote James Dean in Rebel Without a Cause: YOU'RE TEARING ME APAAAAAAART.
