Personally, my favourite ever is Frank Zappa. Man is a genius, and just about as close as I get to a personal hero.

Outside of pop, I'm a huge opera and classical music dork, and spend entirely too much money on it. Also, I'm a pretty bit fan of old Bollywood and musicals, particularly Gilbert & Sulivan and Stephen Sondheim...

A lot of the bands you list I'm not familiar with. Obviously this needs to be remedied. I've heard New Pornographers and Broken Social Scene and liked them a lot. I saw Neko Case open for Rufus Wainwright not too long ago. I was just introduced to the Dresden Dolls and am loving them! I need to hear more chick music that isn't "girl with her emo guitar." I forgot the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Love them, too. Bowie ftw, and Tom Waits, definitely.

You like Bollywood!? Bahaha! My love started with Sholay, but my favourites are Salaam Bombay, Qurbani (curry disco, yes!), Dharam Veer, and Maharaja (the Nadeem-Shravan one.) Mostly I just listen to it though, like I've got a couple of Asha Bhonsle albums, she is so amazing :D
If you like Broken Social Scene and New Porn you would probably like The Besnard Lakes, The Most Serene Republic, and Stars. And Islands is probably right up your alley too. I shall upload some!
If you want some girl without emo guitar: St. Vincent! She does great kind of weird pop music, and she's absolutely gorgeous and a lot of fun (as in, naming her album after an Arrested Development quote...) Feist, Basia Bulat, and Cat Power are all good choices.
You're an opera theatre major!? That's pretty much kind of awesome. My top three operas are Samson et Dalila, Lucia di Lammermoor (mainly cause I have the Sutherland recording ♥), and Tristan und Isolde. Well, those are my top three ignoring the Ring Cycle, which I hold above pretty much any other recorded sound. I've got the big Solti box set, and I adore it beyond anyhing. I also dig Verdi, but I have a hard time choosing my favourite of his... maybe Nabucco? And I also like Pagliacci... and Lakmé... and Don Giovanni. I can go on for a while... I'm actually seeing The Marriage of Figaro on September 24th, which is exciting, as I tend to only see one or two operas a year. What about you?

But as for the opera, you should have just heard me scream. Samson et Dalila is my number one, hands down, favorite opera. Period. I pretty much sing Mon coeur s'ouvre a ta voix to myself every day of my life (barring coughs and illness, of course). It tears me to pieces... all a lie! *sigh* I am purposefully trying to keep myself from using exclamation points here. Oh, I have the Sutherland recording of Lammermoor on vinyl (!) which pretty much means I haven't listened to it in ages.
Yeah, Verdi's insane, and I love La Forza to pieces, Lakme yes. God, Porgi Amor makes me want to cry- goes through my head every time I see a depressed middle aged woman. Yay for seeing Figaro! The last operas I've seen were The Medium (eh) and Turandot. The soprano playing Turandot was an automaton, but the tenor was brilliant- I never understood until then just how orgasmic Nessun dorma was.
I'm also a fan of Offenbach (Hoffman FTW), Puccini (though I think dude picked some weird librettos- I wish I didn't know what the characters were saying anymore), Rossini and Catalani. Maria Callas and Leontyne Price are my personal gods, because they had such rich, imperfect voices that favored the octaves closer to mezzo. Joan Sutherland is another personal favorite of mine, though, partly for her completely awesome personality. She was so fucking nice.
Man, I really need to go see some more live opera now. I did see Denyce Graves perform live, and was perhaps the only person in the audience disappointed with her Mon coeur s'ouvre a ta voix. Aside from that I love her to bits, and can't really stand Kiri te Kanawha.
ETA: Just had to thank you for the St. Vincent and The Nationals recs. I'm slowly working my way through your suggestions, and am so relieved that I can just listen to all this stuff online rather than go bankrupt. So thanks!
