Welp, color me disappointed but willing to keep an eye on it for later. Apple's iPad. Which is really just an iPod if you're saying it in a Kennedy voice.
$500 is a little more than I was hoping it'd be, but it's not insane. What's insane is that simply adding 3G coverage to the device adds $130, and doubling the memory from 16GB to 32GB adds $100! ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS. And it's just flash memory. Come on, Apple. This is 2010 FFS - stop ripping us off on factors that should be trivial by now.
Anyway, I don't have an iPhone or Touch and never will, so the fact that it can access and use all of the "App Store" applications right out of the box, is kinda nice for a person like me who might want this later.
They also showed off a painting and coloring application made just for this thing, which seemed... hey, good enough! No stylus, though.
Throw in a few more paint apps, an animation one, and a few sound ones... that, with the digital reader tech and the 10 hours of (hi-def?) video playback... yeah, I could drop $500 on that later this year. Definitely not now, though. I have a laptop to buy.
I was really looking towards this thing as an artist's tablet. I know Apple is in on the creative people - GarageBand is free with every laptop. So I had my hopes. It may not be what I was hoping, but it's got a lot of potential. I can see people developing more art programs for this guy over the summer. If that happens, I might be clamoring for one of these.
