Today's pet peeve....WRITER'S BLOCK! I no sooner get the damn brats out of the shower & now I can't write a word to save my life! I'm thinking maybe if I stick to my own shit & not toy around with cracked-up fan fics, I just may get my brain back to working order! It is disheartening as hell to find a story that has the premise of holding a good plot, a wonderful story line, and the ability to hold one's attention; only to find that withing the first paragraph it is virtually unreadable simply because the person was either too lazy, too proud, or too stubborn to ask someone for help.
I have three people that help me. If they make a suggestion, I take it. I have been asked by others to beta and when suggestions are made they are ignored. If a person is asking their best friend to beta a story for them, 9 times out of 10 they are not going to get an honest critique. I got damned lucky, Joyce is every bit as brutal as I am. I understand some people cannot take constructive criticism when it is given and flames are never appropriate, but you have to learn to listen if you want to write.
I have had my chapters handed to me in shreds and rewritten them in tears, all while cursing the very air my betas drew, but in the end, I had to admit they were right. My writing has improved.
It is easy to get blocked when you see all the stories thrown up without a care in the world as to grammar, punctuation, dialogue, tense, or anything else.
I alse have to say that the way kids are taught today is a whole lot different than they were in my day. In my day, we stuck with it until everyone had the rules down backwards, forwards, and sideways before we moved on, now the kids are shuffled on. I see it in the school my own children attend. It saddens me to see the state of education these days.
I am not flaming anyone, nor am I trying to start a war. I am simply tossing in my two cents.
