Jeff Healey has been a part of my life since my teens, so nearly 30 years I guess. Not a huge part of my life, but one of those things you cling to as a "brush with greatness" sort of things. The fact that I rubbed elbows with him before he became famous makes it even more special for me.
Two high school friends of mine were in Jeff Healey's first band, and they played at some of our parties during those years, and at others, Healey just came out to party.
One of those two friends, Jeff LeBar, passed away a few years ago from a brain hemmorrage, and the other friend, Rob Quail, played with Healey at the funeral in honour of LeBar.
At the reception afterward, there was a small throng of people around Healey, but in speaking to him, I was struck by how much he was just a "normal" guy.
Just the way he was 30 years ago.
I don't know why this seemed odd to me, but I guess I've always been a bit "star struck" around any celebrity, and I expect them to be a "larger than life".
It's always refreshing and endearing when they aren't.
Jeff Healey was an extraordinary, ordinary guy.
And I shall miss him greatly.
