Summary Second part of a missing moments fic covering the time between Ron being in the hospital wing to a post lavender break up scene with the trio in the great hall.
When Hermione returned to the Gryffindor common room she found Ginny and Harry waiting for her, that she expected, what she hadn't expected was Professor McGonagall also waiting for her.
"Professor?"
"Ah," said Professor McGonagall. "I see Madam Pomfrey's finally managed to pull you away from Mr Weasley." Behind McGonagall, Hermione could see Harry and Ginny trading a look and trying hard not laugh, and felt herself blushing again.
"I thought it would be best," McGonagall continued, either unaware of what was going on behind her or deliberately ignoring it. "If you were to stay with the seventh years at least for tonight. Katie Bell's bed is still free unfortunately, so there is plenty of room."
"You're moving me?" Hermione asked? "Has she done something to my things?"
"No Miss Granger, so far the only property damaged, belongs to Miss Brown. I did warn her however, that any attempt to spread that destruction would would result in a detention."
"Yeah and then she did three protection charms on your stuff just to be on the safe side." Ginny said.
Professor McGonagall gave Ginny a disapproving glare then turned back to Hermione. "Yes, well, Miss Brown has received a rather unpleasant shock tonight. One can not expect reasonable behaviour in these situations."
"I understand Professor," Hermione said, while thinking that sending the birds after Ron was entirely reasonable behaviour.
"I understand how these things go," McGonagall continued. "I was a young girl once myself- Potter, Weasley one word from either of you and it's Detention." Ginny clamped her mouth shut and nodded at McGonagall's back.
"I think your presence tonight would only make things worse. I'm sure she'll be fine in a day or two." - Ginny shook her slowly and held up ten fingers and and continued to repeat the number. Harry was biting down hard on his lip as not to give them away.
"Leanne is expecting you Miss Granger, so I suggest that all three of you turn in.
"Good night Professor" they called out in unison as Professor McGonagall, left through the portrait hole.
"You know Harry," Ginny said as they started to separate, you should probably put a protection charm on Ron's stuff too. Harry's eyes widened at the thought of a crazed Lavender Brown bursting into his dormitory and quickly ran upstairs.
"Do you think she would do something like that?" Hermione asked?
"Dunno," Ginny replied. "You asked out McClaggan, so I suppose anything's possible I guess."
"Don't remind me."
The sound of Lavender's sobs were clearly audible as they reached Ginny's room. "It's okay not to feel sorry for her," Ginny said softly as she turned to look Hermione in the eye. "She never felt sorry for you."
"I know," Hermione said, guilt slowly creeping in. "But it's a horrible thing to go through-"
"Yeah I know," Ginny said looking away and changing the subject. "So, did Ron say anything else?"
"Not really. He apologised, though I'm not exactly sure what he apologised for."
"Isn't it obvious?" Ginny said incredulously. "He was apologizing for the whole Lavender fiasco."
"He wasn't even conscious, who knows what was going through his head."
Ginny's mouth tightened. "Don't you dare start this again, it was you holding back so long that allowed Lavender to sneak in, in the first place."
Hermione's mood was starting to crash. "How I can be sure?"
"Ask him you ninny!" Ginny said exasperated. "You've given me some good advice, now take some. Tomorrow at lunch you go down to the hospital wing, I'll make sure you get some privacy and you talk this out. It's obvious how you both feel, and it will all be fine if you just admit it to each other. Do you have any idea how hard this has been on Harry, to have you two not speaking to each other?"
"You're right," Hermione said. "Thanks Ginny." A ghost of a smile returned to Hermione's lips. "How hard this has been on Harry huh?"
"Oh shut up," Ginny said as she entered her dorm room. Hermione smiled widened as she left Ginny and made her way to the seventh year room. Katie's friend Leanne was waiting for her. After some uncomfortable small talk about the relative health of Katie and Ron, Hermione went to bed.
Ginny had promised Hermione some privacy so that she could talk to Ron, but Ginny hadn't counted on a frantic Mrs Weasley rushing to Hogwarts and refusing to leave her son's bedside all day long. Hermione wasn't sure she wanted to visit with the rest of the Weasleys around, but Harry insisted.
"Harry! Hermione!" Mr Weasley called out. "Come in come in." Mrs Weasley jumped from her chair and embraced Harry before he got three feet in the room. As the rest of the Weasleys gathered round Harry to give their thanks. Hermione walked over to Ron who was looking at her in mild surprise.
"I wasn't expecting you," he said softly.
"Why not?"
"Well you know," Ron said flushing, "Things.."
"You nearly died Ron. Of course I was going to come, I was here yesterday." Hermione paused. "Don't you remember?"
"I don't remember much of anything to be honest," Ron said. "But I'm glad you came." A puzzled frown crossed his face. "Did Lavender come by yesterday?"
"She did," Hermione said her voice flat. "Briefly."
Ron lowered his voice. "It's a lot to ask, but do you think you could get Harry or Ginny to tell her that I'm not allowed any visitors outside of my family?"
Hermione's eyebrows went up. "You don't want her here?"
Ron looked nervously over at his family. Everyone was busy listening to Harry explain his theory that Malfoy had been the one to poison Slughorn's mead. (Everyone except for Ginny who was only pretending to listen, but Ron hadn't noticed.)
"You mental?" he asked. "And have her come up here and call me Won won in front of Fred and George? Think I'd rather drink more poison."
Hermione smacked his arm. "Don't you dare make a joke about that!" she hissed. "Do you have any idea how scary it was for me-us?"
"Sorry," he mumbled. "Just her.. you know and with you being all... and well." Ron swallowed and looked Hermione in the eyes. "I'm glad you came."
"So," Ginny said loudly drawing Hermione's attention as everyone was drifting back towards them. "How is Weasley's Wizarding Wheezes going?"
"Excellent, actually," Fred said. "We were thinking about buying Zonko's, but with everything that's going on.."
"Yeah," George added. "After what happened to Ron they stopped further Hogsmeade visits. No point of having a shop, if you can't reach your customers."
They continued to talk about Fred and George's success and Quidditch until lunch had ended.
Ginny left for Transfiguration and Harry and Hermione headed in the other direction for Charms.
Harry looked over at her while they were walking. "I didn't get much of a chance to talk to Ron." He paused thinking through his words. "Are you and he you know.. friends... again?"
"I think so," Hermione said. "i've been meaning to say this for a while now. You've been a really good friend to me recently Harry. Thank you." Then she leaned in and kissed him on the cheek.
"Oi!" Harry said jumping away like he had just been bitten. "What'd you do that for?"
"I was thanking you," Hermione said somewhat nonplussed.
"If you want to thank me shake my hand or something, haven't we had enough trouble with people kissing people they shouldn't be kissing?" Harry rubbed his fingers over the the spot where she kissed him then looked at them.
"Is this lipstick?" He asked eyes wide. "I better wash this off before someone sees-- Tell Flitwick I'll be right there.." calling the last part out as he dashed off for the nearest washroom muttering to himself.
Hermione rolled her eyes. "Boys," she said as she continued off to Charms.
At dinner Ginny told them that Madam Pomfrey thought it best if he spent one more night to be one the safe side and he should be left to sleep. not wanting to face Lavender, Hermione stayed away from the common room until Ginny gave her the all clear, so that Hermione could retire for the evening herself.
The next morning, Hermione had just entered the common room when the portrait hole open and Ron stepped inside. Hermione smiled in surprise and went to greet him, but Lavender got there first.
"Ronald Weasley, you are the most horrible boy I've ever known! I NEVER want to speak to you again!" Then she swung her bag at him before she stormed out of the common room.
"What the bloody 'ell was that about?" Ron asked rubbing his head.
"You and Lavender broke up," Harry said who had been right behind Lavender.
Ron tried to suppress a smile. "Shame that, still I'm starving. Breakfast?"
"Sure," Harry replied. Ron turned ever so casually to Hermione.
"Do, um.. you want to.. um join us?" he asked her.
Hermione smiled. "Of course."
"Brilliant," Ron said again his smile more obvious. "Let's go then."
Breakfast was like old times. Hermione continued to look through The Daily Prophet for any news on Voldemort and was relieved to find there had been no new attacks. Snowflakes fell onto her paper. Hermione looked up at the ceiling then at Ron's jiggling wand.
"Stop it Ron," she said. "You're making it snow."
Ron, who had been watching Lavender staring at them from another table put down his wand and looked at Hermione. "Tell me how I broke up with Lavender again."
Harry looked up sharply from his copy of Advance Potion Making. Hermione caught his eye and hoping he wouldn't say anything and turned to Ron.
"Um. Well.." Hermione stuttered. "Sh-sh-she came to visit you in the hospital, and you t-talked." she paused trying to figure out just how to tell him without telling him. "I don't believe it was a particularly long conversation."
The follow up question she was dreading as to what the conversation was about didn't come as Ron turned to Harry. "Don't get me wrong," he half whispered. "I'm bloody thrilled to be shot of her, it's just.. that she seems a bit put out."
The three of them looked at Lavender. She sat up when she noticed them looking. Teeth clenched and trembling with rage.
"Yes um," Hermione said trying very hard not to revel in the schadenfreude she was feeling. "She does, doesn't she."
Hermione swallowed and turned back to Ron. "You say don't remember anything... from that night... Anything at all.."
Ron furrowed his brow in concentration. "There is something," he said, a wistful expression on his face, then he shook it off. "But it can't be I was completely boggled wasn't I?"
Hermione laughed weakly. "Right... boggled."
Harry quickly buried himself back into his copy of Advanced Potion Making. Afraid that if she looked at Ron was going to give herself away, Hermione started looking around the Great Hall, when she noticed someone entering.
"Harry," she whispered. "That's Katie."
Harry looked up confused.
"Katie Bell." Hermione explained, realising who she meant Harry went to go talk to her.
"Hermione wanted to leave with him, but she thought back on what Ginny had said about talking to Ron. 'I'm a Gryffindor,' Hermione thought to herself. 'I can be brave about this.'
"Just, you know, out of curiosity, what... is it.. that you think... you remember?" she asked him.
Ron looked at her, flushing slightly. "Well I remember someone was with me. They were holding my hand... brushing my hair.. and um..." Ron looked away. "It couldn't have been Ginny, and I knew it wasn't Lavender, she's way too --" Ron made a grabby motion with his hands. "So it couldn't have happened, unless.." Ron's eyes opened wide. "Did this happen?" he asked Hermione very softly?
Hermione nodded, unable to speak just then.
"But that means you--" Ron's hand went up to his left cheek, where Hermione had kissed him.
"I did" she whispered.
"But I thought you hated me."
"I don't hate you Ron, I was jealous- of her not you." she added after catching the look on his face. "I was angry at you. I thought we were... well that we were going to Slughorn's party together."
Ron's face took on a pained expression. "I know it's just..." he trailed off.
Hermione feeling bold, once again asked the question that had haunted her for months.
"Ron? Why Lavender? Why her?"
Ron looked at her. "My family's had two head boys in it, Charlie was up there too, Quidditch captain and all. And look at what Fred and George were able to do. But you, Hermione are more brilliant than all of them. Some days we're the best of friends, other's we're driving each other mad. Half the time I'm not sure why we're either.
Lavender's simple." Ron caught Hermione's smirk. "You know what I mean. With her I didn't have to worry about saying something stupid or worrying about who You Know Who's been hurting. I wanted something simple. Or I thought I did."
Ron thought for a moment. "Is that what I told her when we broke up? That she was simple? Is that why she's so upset?"
Hermione blushed. "Not exactly, you um well called ...my name... in your sleep. She wasn't thrilled about that."
Ron laughed weakly. "No I suppose she wasn't."
Just then there was a loud BANG! coming from upstairs and then another. Professor Snape ran by their table, his cloak flying behind him. Ron and Hermione looked around.
"Harry!" they said in unison and took off after Snape...
I thought about splitting this up into two or more parts but I really wanted to work on the book version of this missing moment. the timetable is completley different so i want to look at what happened.
