Farming Blog - Entry 1

So, Jen and I are starting a farming experiment.

That is we are starting a vegetable garden. Last Sunday, we planted three tomato plants that I got from a client of mine, and then a row each of cucumber, zucchini, two rows spinach and a couple of baby pumpkin mounds. Here is a picture of where we started:

We have been dutifully watering it at least twice a day (morning and early evening), and sometimes midday if it is hot out. So far, it has been really interesting to do it. We didn't want to start with anything too dramatic, but if things go well this year then we may expand it next year.

Anyway, I went out to water the garden tonight, and we have our first sprouts already! WOW! The one thing that was very interesting was that the "mound" plants (zucchini, cucumber, and pumpkin) weren't as much pushing through the soil, but lifting up whole sections of it. So I tried to lift the proverbial atlases off their shoulders, crumble them up over them to ensure root coverage, but break it up a little so that they can break through. Seemed like the right thing to do! Something to remember for next year, that sometimes the top soil may clump.

Anyway, here are some more pics!!

Pumpkin!

Zucchini, so far the star of the show

Cucumber, which I apparently don't want to spell with two 'u's since I have done it twice now

A small zucchini sprout

Spinach, which is really boring at first.
