Avenged Sevenfold is one of those bands that I never really paid that much attention to, but really, really liked. In fact, I could't even think of anything that they had done until I googled them and found the videos for Bat Country and Beast and Harlot. They were clearly a band that had influences much like my own non-classical ones. You can hear bits of Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Boston, the LA Metal sound from the 1980's (Especially in Beast and Harlot), etc in there. And boy, he certainly had chops - Holy Haleakala!!

It is unusual to see bands lately with this kind of raw talent. Or at least unusual to see bands that flaunt it like this. I think that is one of the things that I liked most about the speed metal fueled records that were coming out in the early nineties from GNR, Megadeth, Metallica, etc. They were really talented, but made no apologies for it. They were playing things that you would not be able to with really working at it, and that was ok with them. To think musically with that kind of complexity is a hallmark of great musicality, regardless of the genre.

Oh, and kudos to anyone that hears the quote from Beethoven in "Beast and Harlot". BRILLIANT!
