We are not bound by an idea; rather, we are an example of instinct. We are not defined by a political party, or the church we may or may not worship at. We are defined by our particular way in thinking. So, I have been thinking lately, what would Harvey do?
With the set back in California--a state with previous contention over our civil rights--and the inverse that is occurring in other states, I wonder about the future of the Homosexual community. We, unfortunately, do not have a Comander-in-Chief, or a Rush Limbaugh, or a Nancy Pelosi. We do not have Harvey Milk, so who will lead us?
The fight for Marriage is a statement. It says, we may think differently about a particular idea, word, or lifestyle, but we are still able to coexist and remain equal. Marriage and civil unions are not equal. They are not equal, because they do not have the same connotation. The meaning in the words, do not weight each other out. Civility does not carry the divinity that religion does. And that is what this whole fight is about.
We can no longer think Dan Savage going toe to toe with the Tony Perkins on late night TV is acceptable lobbying, and our candidates in office can no longer be just Ellen, Anderson or Barney. We may no longer have Harvey, but we still have the same fight in us that he was able to see and bring out.
So we need a leader. Someone that can explain the evolution of society and ways in thinking. Someone that can show how coming out is ok, because you are exactly who you should be. Someone that will be willing to face the terrible slander and backlash. Someone that can handle the scrupulous eye of Media and Right Wing. Someone that can be a moral barometer and a social commentator for our community.
So, I ask again, what would Harvey do?
