Smart Call Blocking: A Concept

Jul 25, 2010 02:38

I was noodling about, looking at the specs of new phones, when I noticed that some new models offer "call blocking," i.e. if your phone number is in the "Do Not Call" registry and idiots call anyway, you can (if you have Caller ID and your local phone company doesn't offer/charges a lot for blocking) set your phone to reject their calls.

This got me thinking of a Good Idea: One of the ways that idiots and spam callers get around call blocks is by changing their numbers, so that you have to put up with at least one idiot call before you add THAT number to the list and so forth.

Now, presumably, lots of people block these numbers on their own. But...why not establish a service where your phone calls a toll free number and tells a central database what numbers you've blocked? That way, when a given number of callers have blocked a number, it automatically is added to a blacklist, which, in turn, updates your phone so it knows to block that number before the idiots have a chance to bother you.

I rather like this idea, myself. What do you think?
