All of the bands tonight were great, and I thankfully video recorded them for Sean (which meant I could be there and enjoy the bands without feeling awkwardly crowded). All things considered, tonight was grand.
My mom sent me a letter today with photo copies of a bunch of articles from the 70s about Tom Waits that she found in a folder in our basement. They were articles that my dad clipped from the newspaper when he was in college...and saved this long. One is a spectacular interview where Tom descibes his conception "amidst the broken bottle of Four Roses, the smoldering Lucky Strike, half a tuna sandwich, and the Old Spice and the One eyed Jacks across the railroad tracks..." (I want to type out this whole thing, but I have a feeling it would be more irritating than interesting for most of the people reading it). I just think it's great that my mom found these in our basement. As I read these quotes, all I can think of is how much my dad (and me) quote Tom Waits...some of the best (or at least most memorable) advice my dad has given me has been quotes like "never trust a scarecrow wearing shades after dark" and "stay in school, eat your vegetables, listen to your mother, and don't take candy from a stranger unless he offers a ride"...and many, many others I'm thinking of.
I'm listening to Bob Dylan's "New Morning Acetates"...it's absolutely phenominal. Aside from the sound quality being much better than on the official release there a bunch of songs that he recorded during the New Morning session and never put on an album that are wonderful...a few of them I have only heard on in concert recordings. Dylan's version of this song is absolutely spectacular...I have a copy of Nick Drake recording it on a home recordings boot. It's really strange to hear both artists doing their version of this song because they are incredibly different, but I can't say that either is better than the other.
