A crashing came through the brush on the opposite bank. The wild, sprawling bushes shook as something fought its way through them, accompanied with the snapping of twigs and branches. And then the bushes parted, and out fell a girl covered head-to-toe in a thin layer of mud and leaves.

Coughing and spluttering as she gasped for breath, the girl pushed herself to her feet. Her white and yellow sneakers were caked with the gunk, as were her khakis and her favorite orange top. Great, just great. Not to mention her hair was an absolute mess, but at least she'd gotten most of the mud out of it. And, not to mention, she was still alive.

Rubbing her green eyes with her fists, Olette Perkins looked around, taking in her surroundings. She'd found the river, having followed the sound of its rushing waters through the jungle. On this side of the river, the bank hung over the water in a little ledge. Further down, it was a sheer drop down into the water. Wonderful. So much for being able to get a drink.

Olette huffed and looked across to the other side, finally noticing the boy sitting there. She inhaled sharply, and then a grin spread across her mud-caked features.

"Hey!" she shouted, cupping a hand around her mouth as she waved the other one, "You're Riku, right?" It looked like him, at least. Then again, it could always be his twin. It was better to check.

Riku looked up when he heard something struggling to get through the bushes. Picking up a stick with a conveniently sharpened tip, he held it close to himself, just incase it was a velociraptor ready to strike. When Olette pushed herself through the foliage, he let himself relax and then laughed, to himself about how much mud she was covered in.

Running a hand through his hair, he noticed that he looked worse-for-wear as well, with his dirt covered jeans, which now sported a few giant splotches of blood. ...Great.

Looking up at the Olette, he offered her a half-grin. How could he not? This was the first present he's seen for hours. Maybe even days--he had seriously lost track of time. "That'd be me," he called back to her. "Olette, right?" He wasn't positively sure that it was her, but it probably was seeing as how they both vowed to find each other near the river.

The brunette girl nodded, rubbing a spot of mud from her cheek with the back of her hand. Ugh, this was gross. Especially with the humidity! She just hoped she wouldn't be attacked by bugs. "Yep!" she replied, "I didn't think I'd find you so soon. Have you seen anyone else yet?"

Olette hadn't, unfortunately. She though she'd heard voices at one point while passing a tree filled with fruit, but before she could investigate, a dinosaur had come barreling towards her. Obviously, she'd had no other choice but to run for her life.

Riku shook his head in the saddest way possible. "Can't say I have. Pretty big jungle," he shouted, subconsciously picking at the blood stains on his pants. The cuts on his arms from that dino attack had long since scabbed over, but he was kinda worried about infection. ...Ew.

"Have you?" Maybe she had caught a glimpse of Nise. Though it was a stupid question to ask, because she would've obviously brought anyone else along, had she spotted them...

"Nope, sorry!" called Olette as she shook her head. Come to think of it, he was probably worried about his twin, considering that they weren't together. She wished she could give Riku some good news.

As for now, there was a bigger problem. Biting her lip, Olette surveyed the rushing river separating them. There was no way she could swim across that. Not to mention that it looked deep and there was no telling what sort of carnivorous fish were residing in it. Considering what she'd seen in this place so far, the fish here must be ten times worse than piranhas.

Looking back at Riku, she yelled, "What do you think we should do now?"

Riku glanced at the river as well. If he were some kind of olympic swimmer, he'd probably swim across, but...he wasn't. Scratching the back of his neck, he thought about it.

"Well, we could always walk in one direction until we find some sort of...nature-made bridge?" he offered, looking around. There were some vines around, so he could try swinging across...

"Okay," Olette said. It sounded like their best bet. Unless, of course, they met some sort of obstacle like a waterfall or a cliff or a gigantic dinosaur like a tyrannosaurus or something.

The girl looked upstream, finding that the trees grew right to the water's edge. She wouldn't be able to go that way without leaving the river, which was a risk she wasn't willing to take. They'd have to go the other way.

"Does downstream work for you?" she shouted back, spluttering as a strand of her muddy hair got caught in her mouth. Gross.

Riku looked downstream and saw that the path was clear for a long while. "Yeah, it does," he said, chewing on his lower lip. Tugging on a vine, it felt sturdy enough.

"Or I could always try swinging across...?" He tugged on the vine even harder, side stepping some giant bug that had fallen out of the tree. He shuddered.

Olette bit her lip, looking down at the water uncertainly. "Er... You sure about that?" she asked in a wary voice, "It sounds pretty dangerous..."

Of course, that was an understatement. Vicious fish, depths unknown, a current that was moving at least fifteen miles an hour - granted, she wasn't always good at judging speeds, but it had to be close to that - and a cliff on one bank. If Riku fell in, she wasn't sure what would happen.

Riku looked at the water and then back at Olette with a grin. "What's life without a little danger?" he asked. Of course, there was no throwing his life away, since Nise was probably still alive out there somewhere.

And he had his band back in the future to think of. Assuming they got back to the future.

Looking around, he spotted a rock and decided that'd be perfect for testing. Tying the rock to one of the vines, he walked back a bit. "Watch out," he shouted and then swung the vine to see if the rock would make it to the other side.

Olette quickly jumped to the side, making sure she was out of the way. She didn't have any reason to worry. The rock passed just short of the edge of the bank before the momentum reversed and swung it back to Riku's side of the river. She didn't think it would make much of a difference; Riku was taller than a rock - obviously - and would be able to reach the ground.

"I think it's okay!" she called back, though she still sounded uncertain, "Are you sure you want to try this?"

Riku caught the vine and then untied the rock. If he swung over and jumped at the right time, he'd be able to make it. Hopefully. ...It's a pity he had done any pole vaulting or something. Maybe that'd actually come in handy right about now.

"...What's there to lose? Aside from my life, of course," Riku shouted across the river. "Besides, it could be days before we find another way across."

Olette chewed on her lower lip again, looking up and down the river. He had a point. And who knew if they'd ever find food, or if they'd be 'separated' by a dinosaur? Sticking together was their best bet, and if that meant that Riku had to risk his life...

Oh, she really didn't feel good about this.

Nevertheless, she took a deep breath and waved him over. "All right, go for it! Just try not to slip and fall to your death or anything, okay?"

Riku nodded and then tugged on the rope to test if it would hold his weight. He surveyed the other side and then wished that maybe, just maybe, he should've payed more attention during physics. Then maybe he'd be able to calculate his chances of surviving this.

Taking a deep breath, he pulled the vine back and took a running leap, just barely suppressing the urge to a Tarzan jungle call. God knows that would've attracted more dinosaurs than necessary.

[ooc: I LEAVE RIKU'S FATE IN YOUR HANDS. XD]

Olette's breath caught in her throat as Riku jumped. She saw his feet leave the ground, saw said ground disappear from beneath him to be replaced with vicious water. Saw the vine pull taut. Saw something move under the surface of the water. Saw the vine begin to unravel. Saw that something break the surface and saw its rows of glistening teeth and its sharpened scales and how gigantic it was that it nearly spanned the entire width of the river and now it was lifting its head up towards Riku with its deadly maw opened wide-

Saw the vine snap.

Saw Riku fall.

"Riku!" screamed Olette. She dived for the edge of the bank, fingers latching onto his forearm just in time. She knew this was a bad idea, a really, really bad idea, and now that fish-crocodile-dinosaur thing was rearing upwards, and oh, they were in trouble now.

{ i tried? xD }

Riku's heart almost stopped when he fell, but started beating again when he felt Olette's hands on his forearm. Holy crap. Reaching out with his other hand, he grabbed the ledge and started pulling himself up, moving his legs away from the hungry creature below. Slipping a bit, the angry monster managed to grab his shoe (his favourite shoe), almost pulling Riku down with him.

Finally, he managed to heave himself halfway up on the ledge. "Holy crap," he said with a sigh, pulling himself up all of the way. "Never trying that again." He offered Olette a half-smile before looking down at his shoe-less foot.

Life was so cruel to him today. First his favourite shirt, then his favourite shoe.

[you make Riku sad XD]
