lawn care and hypothetical kittens

Just got some much needed excercise with a healthy bout of lawn mowing. I lowered the blade a bit and liked the results *much* better. It's still not perfect, but I don't know if that's owing to my reel mower or my weedy yard or a little of both. Somehow none of the houses around mine have weeds, but mine has more weeds than grass. How do you fix such things (without chemicals) short of pulling it all up and laying down sod?

I got my hopes up unreasonably today just to be disappointed. After I arrived at work, but before we opened, a mysterious box appeared by our door. I knew it would be books - people who don't have time to wait and don't care about the money will"donate" their books to us like that fairly often. But my silly brain didn't think "books" when I saw it. It thought "kittens!" And then, in the space of the two dozen steps it took me to get to the door, I fantasized about how incredible it would be to have a box-full of kittens loose in the store - even for just one day as we sorted out what to do with them. What glorious thoughts those were. I figured we'd get *nothing* accomplished, bookstore-wise, but who cares? Kittens!

Of course, it wasn't a box of kittens. And I was tragically disappointed. In the space of thirty seconds or less, I'd already started naming them. To add insult to injury, the books were utterly crappy and most had to be tossed because they were all torn up. >_< Why can't it ever be kittens? Just once?
