Today was fun. I went to see Avenue Q with a bunch of my family, and it was even better than I expected. I loved every bit of it. I already knew that the puppeteers would be onstage, singing and manning the puppets, but I didn't really know how that would work until I saw it. Surprisingly, they not only didn't distract me from the puppet characters, but they actually *added* a more physical element to them. For example, every time the (very pretty) puppeteer manning Lucy the Slut walked away, she made sure you were watching her hips sway, and that became a part of Lucy's character. Also, I was surprised at the switch-offs. The lovely puppeteer I just mentioned, for example, didn't voice Lucy at all. Rather, she just handled the puppet when Kate Monster was also on stage, since the same actress voiced both Lucy and Kate. It was neat.
Tom was still sick, but he seemed to really enjoy the show. As is typical of him, though, he was very attached to the original Broadway soundtrack and became a bit discontented when lines were changed. Fortunately, not too much was changed. I was really happy to take him along. He really likes musicals, but usually can't be bothered to come out to see a show. I don't totally get it, in fact. I'm more the type who would happily sit through a mediocre show in the hopes that it might be good (or at least have some really good parts), whereas Tom won't come unless he can be pretty certain that it's going to be wonderful. Lisa brought Travis. He seemed to have fun, which is good.
I've gotta say, though - I'm kind of glad that my parents weren't able to sit with us. The show, having songs like "The Internet is For Porn" and "You Can Be as Loud as the Hell You Want When You're Making Love" isn't exactly the kind of thing you want to watch with your Daddy right next to you. It's funny, because it's not like any of us are stodgy or stuffy enough to be in denial about the others *enjoying* such humor. Still, I guess it's more comfortable for all parties if we enjoy it separately. Particularly the puppet sex scene. Straightforward sex was graphic enough, but they included oral and spanking and then some. I never thought I'd see puppets in such positions. ^_^;
After the show, we went to B.D.'s Mongolian Barbecue for dinner. It was okay. I'm not wild about the place, but Tom loves it and everyone else was enthusiastic, so I went happily. I got a sort of fantastic dessert, so I can't complain. It was nice having dinner all together, especially after enjoying such a lively show. Also, it was cool to see how well Travis fits in with everyone. I only wish Tom was feeling better so he could've enjoyed it a bit more. He's asleep right now, ruining his schedule completely, and making going to work tomorrow night even more difficult. But he's sick, so I don't figure he has much of a choice.
I think I'm going to take a shower and then crawl into bed with a book. I want to stay up late writing, but I have to work in the morning. I hope everyone has a good night.
