Wow, the German book-cover is awesome. I like it even better than the American one. In the release info of the German audio CD of "Der Zirkel des Dämons" it says: In the www Sara Rees Brennan is known and loved as an author of "fanfiction". Not that many German readers will know what "fanfiction" is, but it's great that they mention it :-).

Oh, I think lots of people round here know fanfiction - at least lots of poeple round me :) There's also http://www.fanfiktion.de, which is quite popular.
I'm not saying anything about the quality of German fanfic... I've given up on it a long time ago XD

Oh, of course, people who are on the nets and who are fans know fanfiction. I am talking about people in the publishing industry. Whenever I start talking about fanfic, I get blank stares. Did you see there was an article in the taz about fanfiction yesterday?

I refrain as well from commenting on the quality of German fanfic ;-).

You have to check out liriaen's writing. She writes in English and German as well, and I'm absolutely in love with her Cyberpunk!Draco (Algebra in der temporärern autonomen Zone, Coda 2.3 in German - Vanadium I-Ching in English). You can find her on fanfiktion.de and also on skyehawke; the links are in the header of her LJ-page. Her stile has a gritty realism and poignancy, and it breaks me every time I read it, but I cannot not read it from time to time because it's so beautiful.

And if you like to read a little H/D with Harry being a priest, you might want to take a look at this. *cough* Or check the "german" tag in my LJ, which will lead you to a mixture of HP (drabbles and shorter stories) and original stuff.

Thanks for the links. No worries about advertising one's own work - I mean, we don't have publishing machines behind our fic, and what is a girl going to do ;-). I will check out Liriaen's and your German fanfic once I am done with workworkwork here. Do you know a moderated German fanfic archive that you could recommend?

No, all I know is fanfiction.de. Nothing which is moderated.

I have several German HP comms friended on LJ, but people rarely post there these days. And some of the HP writers seem to have wandered off to other playgrounds as well. :-( It's a pity. We had two ficathons at ficathon_de - which was fun. The quality of the drabbles, of course, was of all sorts.

There is daily-drabble.de, khana is responsible for that one, but again, no mod in the sense of quality control.

I wish more of the good German H/D writers would write in German as well. But most of them even don't want to think about reading German fanfiction, however well-written. And there's not much fame to gain from writing in German, lol.

I would promptly visit your archive and read there, should you ever create it!

No problem! I enjoyed reading your thoughts. :-)

You raise an interesting point here, about anyone old enough migrating into the English speaking communities while the native communities are left with the younger folks. It is something I definitely notice in the German HP fandom as well: people are younger - though not all of them are immature.

Another problem is that whenever someone writes in a language other than English, this reduces the chance to share the story. Not only does the story have a smaller target audience, but you can't even share it with all your International friends. This sometimes frustrates me to no end, because I really like to write in English and in German.

When I said inmature, I meant that the fandom is young in itself- not only that it is composed of young people, but that it still hasn't gone through big changes in its production, like when FictionAlley started implementing things like beta readers and eMentors, creating an structure support for people who wanted to improve their writing and read better fanfic. I used to think the Hispanic fandom would eventually come to it, but now I have realized that the people who are old enough to think about it, who have an improved literary taste, mostly migrate and try to never think about the horrors found on FF.net/es. And those who are new to fandom and go online for the first time find a majority of younger people who still write Mary Sues and are Dan Radcliff groupies- and that's fine, they'll outgrow it, but the people who would like to participate in more sophisticated discussions are simply scared away ( ... )
