Hello wonderful baby fandom!
I'm really pleased to see how this community and the fandom is thriving - so much wonderful art, fic, and impromptu collaborated medleys. I've never been part of such a small fandom, especially in its infancy, so this is a neat experience.
I greatly enjoyed TDL - really, it's a stunningly good first novel from an author

All of this is, of course, IF Alan dies in the books. (Although if she's of the school that asks, "What's the worst thing that could possibly happen to my main character?" and then does it, I think we're really likely to see Alan die -- clearly that's the worst thing she could do to Nick!)
But, like I said, Sarah doesn't generally shy away from conflict. It's one of the things she did best in her fanfic, so like I said, I'm less worried about her doing stuff like this than I would be about many other "first time" authors.
(Or wait, did you just mean the word "handwaved"? That's a sci-fi term for a plot development that actually makes no sense but the author glosses over it hoping that people either won't notice or won't care.)

Excellent point. I too wonder if another arc of the series will be how Nick's level of humanity develops - if Alan seeks to work with him on that or not.

ACK - I never got the impression she had a trend for being that sadistic from her fanfic.

And Sarah responded "if anything I'm crueler to my own characters, as I don't feel the need to return them." It seemed ominous to me, and it's stuck with me all this time, especially now that I'm fond of her characters.
