Idol Thoughts v. Ugly Carpet Cuts
I didn’t take notes on group night because I hate group night. It is a miserable excuse for drama and tears, and has no relevance to the rest of the competition, which is entirely individual. Some of the eliminations, such as Rose and Emily, were shocking and IMO, would not have happened but for the bizarre drama of group night. The results of group night could easily be duplicated by just cutting 1/3 of the contestants at random (and make as much sense).
Adam: Looks like he’s in pain when he sings. But I like what he did.
Matt: Uses his piano chops really well. Liked him a lot better than I did earlier. The style really suited him.
Jamar: Hate the song choice with a passion, and I would like to send the neon sweater back to Sesame Street, but I still really like him, and at least Paula seems to, too.
Danny: Has been growing on me. I think that was *just* the song for him.
Noop!Dog: I love you. Have from the beginning. But man, that was a weird, weird song. WEIRD.
Jorge: I wish they’d let him sing in Spanish.
Scott: Just the wrong, wrong song. Why, my brother, why? I think he nuked himself.
Kendall: Not disappointed that I haven’t heard her before. Buh-bye.
Stevie: Yay! We haven’t seen her in so long I was afraid she’d been cut at some point. I’m not certain that was the strongest song choice, but I am still hoping for her.
Lil: Power, power, power. Bring it, Lil.
Kristen: If any group deserved to go home last week, it was hers. All of them were psycho lunatics completely disconnected from the actual task of choosing and performing a song. Unfortunately, that was a really strong performance.
Misha: She’s cute. Where’s she been?
Tatiana: She was B-A-N-A-N-A-S on group night. I don’t care if she became Madonna overnight; if life is remotely fair, she’s gone. I cannot listen to another moment of her cackling. “Ha, ha, ha!”
Alexis: Girl, you know I like you. But that song is atrocious even when Carrie sings it.
Kenny: Who?
Jasmine: Oh, that was not good. She can sing so much better. Thrown off by the band or backup, maybe?
Nathaniel: Belongs trapped in an elevator with Tatiana for all eternity.
Joanna: I’m going to repeat my “try something else, dear; music isn’t working for you” advice from the first round.
Stephen: He was such a pleasant surprise the first night of Hollywood week. What a shame he melted down.
Nick/Norman: He’s like the YouTube video I can’t stop replaying. There should be a 12-step program.
Ann Marie: The timbre of her voice is lovely. Even if that wasn’t the greatest song for her, the judges ought to consider her previous performances.
Ju’not: I enjoyed what he did with that song.
Kaylyn: Aw, she’s adorable. And that didn’t strike me as dire. Why did Simon cut her off?
Lenishe: Great song for her.
Michael: And not so much for Michael. Ugh.
Room 2: NO WAY. I really, really didn’t expect that. Alexis and Arianna (whom I don’t think I’ve seen since I picked her from round 1) are through. I’m also pleased for Jasmine and Michael, who deserved another shot.
Room 3: I hardly recognized anyone in that room, so no surprise they’re not moving on.
Room 1: This is the room full of heavy hitters from the top of the hour. I’m not sure how much suspense AI thinks they can get away with. Anoop, Scott, Jamar, and Lil are announced as through. I’m not certain but I thought I saw Frankie as well.
Room 4: B-A-N-A-N-A-S. Tatiana doesn’t need a reality show, she needs a therapist. And Paula needs a restraining order. Cody and TK, where have you been! Ann Marie! NICK, WTF?!
Unfortunately, this isn’t the final cut for the start of audience participation, but we are at least closer. My original picks (limited by the small number of auditions actually shown, and by my missing one night of auditions) were: Stevie, Arianna, Emily, Cody, Scott, Lil, Jamar, Asa, Jessica, Anoop, Brent, Alexis, Ann Marie, TK, Frankie, Rose.
Of these, Arianna, Cody, Scott, Lil, Jamar, Anoop, Alexis, Ann Marie, and TK are confirmed through. Frankie may be through. Emily, Jessica, and Rose were eliminated; and I believe Stevie was as well. Brent and Asa seem to be AWOL.
