This was very well done! It's been said flat out and referred to in canon plenty of times, the whole monsters versus humans thing. Humans can be driven by so many things and are so cruel. If you don't wanna get in trouble or have a moral problem with hurting or killing a human, it's harder.
I watched "In the Custody of Strangers" with Emilio Estevez on TV when I was really young and it scared the shit outta me. Horror movies never got to me and I love them, but give me a movie where humans do horrific things just because they want to and it'll get to me even if I like the movie. I'm the type that really, really avoids getting in trouble, to the point where I'm teased about it in fact.
I can see this happening to Dean even if I think John would never have done this. I think John would have done something to Dean himself as far as setting him straight, but all three guys have always made it obvious that you don't underestimate humans and I don't see John letting this happen if it was in his power to stop it.
I'm not critiquing your fic - just being all opinionated and probably overprotective of John's character :D
I really liked how you portrayed Dean. It's canon that Dean is all cocky and knows he can get himself outta situations by being adorable as is the fact that he hides how scared he really is.
Your choice of going with Warren being the victim was brilliant. It would have of course been a horrible thing to go through if it would have happened to Dean, but Dean's gonna tear himself up inside over what happened to Warren even though he tried to help the kid.
Oh wow, thank you so much for that long and thoughtful comment!
I understand your desire to protect John ;-) And I actually agree: he'd never let Dean get in front of a judge. Too many trails left. But since the prompt asked for Dean to end up in prison, I kinda needed it. And in some way, I'd think he might have thought it useful. After all, it was just theft for sweets and beer, nothing really important.
I liked putting Dean in a position where he ISN'T the main victim, but is still really shaken by it. It's in a way more interesting to play with that scenario than to let him be hurt himself.
